The October meeting of the San Diego DUG is happening on Wednesday October 13th at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. We've got lots of great content for developers.
This month I'll be talking about Module development with a focus on theming Harmony... What does that mean? I'll show you how to hook your module into the theme layer to enable you to provide a polished basic look to your development projects, while still allowing a themer to do proper customization where and when needed. This will keep your themers happy and create a harmony in your development workflow. All too often, Drupal developers will do basic development in the module layer, and add themeing elements in the custom theme for which the feature is being developed. This strategy is a problem because the new feature looks awful when the site switches themes and sometimes doesn't even work because it's missing some javascript from the theme it was originally built for.
This session will also function as a basic primer on module development, as I'll be going over several hooks and Drupal API's that you can use as a developer to make powerful, portable, and attractive development projects. We'll go quickly over each concept, but when we're done, we'll have covered hook_theme, formsAPI and form alters, system settings forms, configuration variables, hook_block, drupal_add_css/js, includes, and file organization structure.
Next we'll have Rich Yumul giving us his famous Eclipse rundown. You can learn about all the wonderful development features that eclipse has to offer.
We also have some exciting Sandcamp updates to share, so we'll talk about those a bit before moving on to our usual round of lightning talks.
Lightning talks give anyone (and I mean anyone - you, the person next to you and the one across the room) the chance to discuss a recent Drupal thought, observation, or experience that takes five minutes or less to talk about. You can teach us something, wonder out loud why X doesn't work like you think it should, or ask questions about some Drupally thing you're struggling to understand. The only rule for Lightning Talks is that you're going to be stopping at five minutes whether you're done or not. Other than that's it's fair game, so step up and have fun!
