Package names for contributed modules

Modules are grouped on the module administration page (admin/modules in Drupal 7) by Package. Sensible grouping can greatly enhance site builders' Drupal experience. (Package is defined, optionally, in our module's .info file.) As developers of contrib modules, we can come to this wiki page before choosing our package name to see what other thoughtful module developers have chosen for their package.

Can Ubuntu/Debian and Drupal cooperate on a repository strategy?

Just a few days ago, Ubuntu said it will offer Alfresco CMS. This will sure give Alfresco wider exposure and wider use because it is easier to install using apt-get/aptitude.

While Drupal is already in both Debian's and Ubuntu's repositories, it is quite a few revisions behind on Drupal 5, and no Drupal 6 is available.

Let's make some noise!

It seems it has been awhile that this idea has sat in the barn, now lets make the push to get it going for Drupal 7!

Has any development been done yet? I envision something similar to the Debian/Ubuntu package manager where you can simply search through a repositories page and put a check next to the package(s) you want to install. Then hit install and it will take care of any dependencies you need as well.

Another cool feature would be updates. It would be able to provide a list of modules which have a new version out and everything can be upgraded at the click of a button.
