With respect to the concern about the health of this project, I have had a conversation with Will White about taking the reins and becoming a maintainer.

We are embarking on a project that would generate about 250,000 messages a year. Our client is concerned about costs, even at $.03 a message (plus shortcode fees). We are looking at using a cellular modem in the data center. Does anyone have any experience in that area and if so can you share?

For example, something like one of these.

Does anyone have experience dealing with the carriers on something like this, for example, costs and volume limits?

We recently completed several new features over at VozMob (http://vozmob.net). VozMob stands for mobile voices / voces moviles, it's mobile blogging that lets users post text, photo, video, and audio via sms, mms, and phone calls (no data plan or app download needed). You can find our full release 0.2 on github: http://code.vozmob.net.

New features that are tested and now live:

I believe a great use for this module module would be a SMS alert system for a school or hospital. I run a few dozen drupal school and church websites and I would love to have a SMS application that would send out a SMS message to alert website subscribers to a school closing or a school lockdown.

Has this been done? Or can someone point me to where I need to go? Or does someone have the ability to do this and want to make some xtra $?

After starting a patch for providing an extended new hook system in v2 (http://drupal.org/node/442748), I corresponded with Will to start efficient planing of the 2.x branch by introducing some main goals for development. You are welcome to join the discussion and leave proposals.

SMS Framework will be stated "on heavy development" so should not be used on production sites at the moment.

Hi everybody, what I would like to have is the possibility to send sms to people without having to ask them to register to my site to receive my sms.
So I thought to this: create a flexible content type that alter the standard node form adding a phone field to it.
In this way you can create a very selective sms-blast-like module.
Think about having numbers stored in nodes instead of user profile. This would give the possibility to create groups, restrict access and send sms only to desired people.
Since now I've fiugred out a custom module that hold some of these features.

Notifying users of new content, events, actions is something that is common to enterprise level applications, social network or simply a blog. Notification can happen in many forms and via many mediums, some of the prominent ones being e-mail, instant messaging, SMS or live feed. Solutions uptill now have been separate and distant to each other, even though the problem is essentially the same, that is some message needs to be relayed to one of your user. The medium and carrier would differ and so would be the urgency and priority of delivery.

I have just finished a gateway module for Txtlocal (http://www.txtlocal.com), and would like it make it available for inclusion in the SMS Framework package. The module was written for 6.x and supports inbound and outbound messaging with all of txtlocal's extended options (specify sender, delayed send, message reference, WAP PUSH).

I had to make a slight mod to sms.module because the receiver MSISDN is important for my project. I have written it to the phpdoc header in the gateway module, but here it is:

I need to find a way to open Drupal 6 up to sms registration. The way I imagine it working is that people can create a Drupal account by sending their name to the application via sms. They then receive an auto reply containing their password and can then visit the site (either directly via a phone or a web browser) and log in using their mobile phone number (instead of an email address) and that password.

It would need to remain possible for people to register in the traditional way with an email address.

What do people think?
