Gender Diversity in Tech Requires Applicant Diversity

I would like to see more diversity at my company, but representation by women (not surprisingly) stays representative of the percentage of female applicants we see. That is too say, not very high. I would like to encourage more female applicants to apply to our development shop and to tech positions more generally.

So, here are my questions:

  1. Are there any recommendations on what an employer can do to make his/her company more attractive to female applicants?
  2. How can a business do more to encourage more women choosing tech as a career path?

Please take this 5 minute census about women in open technology and culture! http://svy.mk/adacensus2011

what strategies / tactics would you suggest to attract women to software development, web design, and Comp Sci in general?

I've started looking into the issue of why there aren't many women in working in the Sciences and Engineering. I'm particularly interested in attracting women to Computer Science, software development, and web development. I think women could and would add a lot to improve whatever field they chose - whether they wanted to be Database Administrator, Drupal Hacker, SysAdmin, etc. I think they approach problems differently, and they would help create better solutions.
