Custom Theming

I am a designer and a newcomer to Drupal who is interested in learning custom themes from scratch and possibly creating an infographic that summarizes the logic of the various custom theming strategies in Drupal for a typical site build process.

This idea is based on the http://css-tricks.com/more-sidebar/ post.

Simply described, the idea is to automatically show/add blocks, or panes in Panels, so that they only take up the same height space as the content. Then unused space will be filled with content, making the pages look better and content aligned on the height.

This could be done in various ways such as:

estoy laburando en una pagina de una consultora y la cabecera seguramente va a ser o un slideshow o una cabecera flash, pero como va atener seciones fijas, me gustaria que esas seciones tubieran, diferente cabeceras fijas cada una, saben si es posible hacer esto? en drupal como haria cualquier hijo de vecino en html?

I'm planning a fairly flexible theme which could hopefully be used by many TTs. It will feature multiple regions, be based on Fusion (or possibly Zen) and I'm also hoping to integrate Colour Module Next Generation to allow adjustable colour schemes.

I am turning all the free webempoweredchurch templates into Drupal themes. I am trying to implement the different styles for each theme. Could someone point me in the right direction on how to use the color module.
