We need your help ...

At the moment we are (at most) 1 1/2 people working on the gallery module and its affiliates. Thats not a problem per se (for example it allows us to make major changes and rapid progress without lengthy discussions), but there is little time left to answer all requests submitted to the issues queue. Also the G2 integration forums are almost unsupported because of our limited resources and we still dont have a basic documentation online in the G2 codex.

We really need a few people helping with documentation, support in the forums and trying to pre-populate the issues queue, i.e. separating configuration issues from bug reports, etc. I know that G2 and the Drupal gallery module are pretty complex and most people dont feel familiar enough with the details to help here. But please consider to give it a try nonetheless. Of course it may take some time for you to learn and even more time to get experienced, but you will see that the vast majority of issues are actually just a small number of different problems. We can provide you test installs to play with and we will - of course - help you to get started. We will still watch the queue and read/answer issues (or correct you if needed). We wont let you drown!

Please people, if you got some spare time, get up and start helping. Or just visit http://codex.gallery2.org/Integration:Drupal and write a few lines of documentation.

Feel free to use this page to organize yourselves, coordinate, comment, ... feedback is welcome ... ;)

Thanks in advance,
Thilo (profix898)

Playing with G2.3svn and D6.1

Hey Thilo,

Not a lot of response to your call to action. I'm sorry to say that I'm just trying to get a test install of Drupal 6.1 + G2.3 + gallery module 6-dev up and running and have never used any of the other versions. As I have time I'll play with it and see if I can't debug or write some useful documentation. For the time being, I'm still trying to get navigation menus to show in sub-albums and just get a basic install up and running.

I just thought I would just

I just thought I would just do it instead of talking about it.

I figured as much, but

I figured as much, but Thilo's message looked so lonely. I wanted him to know we were reading it and beta testing and not just taking all his work for granted.

Not sure it is the best idea to start with the unstable D6 version of gallery module. Many things work, but there are some serious issues with that version to be resolved. If you want to get familiar with the module, it would probably be better to stay on Drupal 5 for now. But in case you like the pain of unstable code you are welcome to do beta testing and to report any issues you encounter to the queues :)
My current focus is on stabilizing the D6 module and coding features for tighter integration (most of it not published yet). However in the long run we will need to focus on usability as well (one point is a better integration with G2Image). If you could provide some feedback in this respect or better write about some concrete ideas that would be helpful as well.

I just thought I would just do it instead of talking about it.

Right, but still responding to my message and givin feedback is more than most users do ...

I am currently waiting on

majortom's picture

I am currently waiting on two or three items (CiviCRM 2.1 and UberCart among others) before I can move my sites over to Drupal 6. I expect to be able to move in the next month or so, and once I am ready, I plan to try a completely clean install (from CVS/SVN) for those modules I use. If I am successful, I will document what I have done (including the CVS/SVN and drush scripts).

I do appreciate the work that has been done to make this whole system work as well together as it does. Thanks!

I love the pain of beta

ergophobe's picture

I love the pain of beta testing ;-)

More seriously, I am only installing and running it now on a junk test site with no real data. This is strictly for the purpose of testing the beta version of the D6/G2.3 combo and will be thrown away once a stable version of both is out.

I honestly never upgraded to drupal 5 and was thinking of doing it (and will have to to bridge to 6), but what I realy care about are the improvements in the D6 version of the module, so I figured I would play with that. I just hope I can find more time and provide some useful feedback and, possibly, bug hunting. Of course, if there were 48 hours in a day, you would probably have it all done by now anyway ;-)

Ok, I'll try

Thilo,

I do appreciate all your work on the gallery module and I use it on my site myhreseniors.com and I want to help. But, I don't code and, like eveyone else, I have many other projects like running my studio. So where to start?

Where's the best place for a non-coding type to help out?

What part of the documentation? Theming? Configuration?

Try to follow up in Gallery Issues or Gallery integration forums? Which? And here, is any response better than a helpful one? I see many posts go without response for weeks.

Jim

I'll try too

I'm ashamed to say that I'm the one who made the initial request for "tighter integration" and have not helped out so far. I've joined the group and will do what I can to help test and document since I'm not a PHP Jedi.

New approach to documentation and on-line help

Read http://drupal.org/node/282092 for details and please consider to contribute. There 106 subscribers to this group. If everyone only writes 5 lines of text to document a particular option we have made a huge step forward.

I am not in position to help as I could never manage to get gallery2 to work on my site and I couldnt find anyone to help me to get it to work, although I did ask a few people who had already had it installed on their sites but they were unwilling to help me as well, so I went with the CCK and image field options instead, I forgot to unsubscribe from group. So apologies

Views and CCK are finally out for 6.3

ergophobe's picture

So I'm almost through getting my site working with Views and CCK for 6.3 and updating the theme to 6.3. After that, the next step is Gallery integration. I'm guessing (hoping) that a lot of people have been in my boat and have had drupal projects on hold pending the beat versions/release candidates for Views and CCK.

I documented pretty thoroughly my process for getting Views and CCK converted from 4.7. I'll do the same for getting Gallery going.
