Waterloo Region Drupal Users Group

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

A group for Drupal users in southern Ontario, mainly from Kitchener, Waterloo, as well as Cambridge, Guelph and surrounding areas.

Who

All Drupal enthusiasts are welcome to join us for discussion and demonstration of topics for beginners and beyond.

What

Topics range from implementation examples and demonstrations to tutorials and workshops to round-tables, question and answers and panel discussions.

When

Meetings are held monthly, except for July, August and December. Attendance is free. We meet on the third Thursday of each month, from 19:00 to 21:00.

Why

Learn about different aspects of working with Drupal, including development, site building, design, and more. Coming to a meetup is also a great opportunity to network with others who work with Drupal.

Where

Our new meeting location will be at the University of Waterloo, Hagey Hall room 119. Campus map

How

Hagey Hall (HH) is near the south-west corner inside the ring road (the road that goes in a loop around the main campus). Convenient parking is right across the road in H lot ($5 payable by credit card on exit). There are many transit stops near campus, including an LRT stop on the east side of ring road. View transit stops on Google maps

If approaching from H parking lot, look for the yellow/light wood doors in the big brown/red brick building:

If approaching from the north side, you'll be looking for a new glass entrance that looks like this.

Inside the door there may be a map of the building. Room 119 is towards the west side.

To get there, walk through the building until you come to an open, modern space. It looks like this:

The doorway to get to Room 119 is to the left (right if you came in the north entrance). Look for "Drupal meetup" signs.

Sidebar on some pages that will hold blocks but not on all pages

I'm trying to have a sidebar on some pages and full width content on other pages. I tried to create a sub theme of my current default and select it on the page I'm trying to provide the sidebar region but it didn't go through (it was a view page and the advanced->theme link is labeled "information" and whenever I try to change theme it is my default theme when I go back.)

My primary theme is an Omega subtheme with a full width content region. My second lists my primary as the base theme so that I can draw in all style work I've already done.

Am I using the wrong approach?

Event type:
User group meeting

This month we're going to be having a group training session, courtesy of Drupalize.Me. Each video in a series is typically 10 minutes long, so we'll have lots of opportunities to ask questions and discuss with the group.

The question is, what topics do we want to go over? Between these comments and a few emails, it sounds like there's quite a bit of interest in migrations! So, we'll be going through:

Should be an interesting topic, and a great opportunity to tell any "war stories" from previous CMS migrations.

Group exercise: redoing three sites, single sign on, Drupal commerce

Start:
2013-09-19 19:00 - 21:00 America/New_York
Event type:
User group meeting

After a summer hiatus, the Drupal Users Group for Waterloo Region is back ...

For September, we have a group exercises, where group members will provide input to someone who wants to use Drupal to create a site.

The first site is for a local charity that has three drupal online communities. They want to decide if they should keep the communities in Drupal and do a refresh or if they should re-build in a easier/simpler/ better platform.

Some other areas they like to discuss:
- Single sign on to the three communities - is this possible?

Drupal commerce set-up help

Hi there,

I am looking for some expert guidance on how to set-up products in drupal commerce. I've been waiting for a meeting but thinking this might be a better approach.

I'm just learning Drupal and have not found the online tutorials very helpful as my developers have let me know custom development will be involved for what I am looking for. I was wondering if there is going to be a meeting in Sept or if one of you experts would be available to give me a run down and your opinion on approach.

Thanks,
Carla

Five years of Drupal meetings in the Waterloo Region

It has been more than five years since the Waterloo Region Drupal Users Group started.

Special thanks to:

  • Richard Weait who co-started the group, and kept hounding me for it, so that we don't commute to Toronto (gas was cheaper then!)
  • Charles McColm and Paul Nijjar for making a venue available all these years without missing a beat, opening early and closing after we all leave ...
  • All past speakers and long time members.

So, what did you like about the group? What memories do you have? What ideas do you have to make it better?

Post below any thoughts you have ...

A Workflow for Release Management

Start:
2013-03-21 19:00 - 21:00 America/Toronto
Event type:
User group meeting

By the time you've installed and set up your first Drupal site, you're probably quite aware of the mystical connection between Drupal and Lego*. Create the content types, build the views, pull in additional functionality through the thousands of contributed modules, and BAM! Site done! Just like building an awesome spaceport with Lego.

Except! Maintaining and updating a live site presents a new set of challenges compared to building a site before launch.

Drupal 7 Module Development Training in Toronto

Start:
2013-03-27 09:00 - 2013-03-28 16:30 America/Toronto
Organizers:
Event type:
User group meeting

Drupal is a modular, open source web content management framework that ships with basic functionality in the form of core modules. For the most part, you add new functionality with third party modules (known as contributed modules) that can be downloaded from Drupal.org. At some point you may find limitations. You may want to modify functionality in a contributed module or core. You may want to move your configuration to code, or access an external data source.
