DITAmashup (structured/unstructured) example

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Hi, All --

Awhile back I suggested a DITA "mash-up" structure and workflow process that I thought might be a candidate for the Drupal docs--this was based on my prior work as a DITA consultant, my reading of the Drupal doc group discussions, and my own understanding of what I assume are typical problems putting together an open-source, structured/unstructured collection of topics.

My business partner and I have put together a model DITAmashup collection on one of our sites that is accompanied by a post explaining how we did it and what we think are its benefits:

http://www.xmldocs.info

Basically he wrote a Python script to publish to WordPress through its RPC interface, and we used metadata and expanded Search to pull together the structured pages and unstructured posts in a way that we think might have possibilities in other environments. We think it would work even better in Drupal, and we plan to do that next -- probably using the same DITAinformationcenter collection.

We would love to get comments from the Drupal doc community, and I still hope to contribute to your doc efforts -- I'm at least turning my full attention to Drupal (rather than WordPress) at this point.

Thanks, Anna

Official plans for Drupal.org docs...

jhodgdon's picture

The official plans currently in place for drupal.org documentation can be found at
http://drupal.org/node/1005530
That has links to a couple of issues that are somewhat DITA-related:
http://drupal.org/node/995370
http://drupal.org/node/995362

But it looks like you're particularly interested in the XML aspects of DITA in this project -- and we're not planning on wholesale DITA or XML adoption any time soon for the official drupal.org documentation. There are some people very interested in doing DITA in Drupal though -- I'm sure they'll see and respond to this post. :)

hi Anna, We've started

hi Anna,

We've started working on a DITA set for Drupal, you can find it at http://drupal.org/project/dita

We've written a bunch of blog posts about our effort to make Drupal DITA capable at http://www.pronovix.com/category/all/dita

As Jennifer pointed out, the official Drupal docs won't be moving to DITA in the near future, but if you want to help push the DITA Drupal effort we would be glad to have you onboard :)
