As a new DBUG member I wanted to introduce myself (and colleague). My team is the marketing end of a small consulting firm in Denver. As part of that effort we create quite a few websites that have traditionally been hosted on third party CMS platforms at a cost. Until recently that model has sufficed as we have been very up-front about being designers over developers.

Recently, however, our needs have changed and we're attempting to wean ourselves off of the crutch that is our current CMS hosting provider/developer. Basically, we need to bring things in-house to whatever extent we can and gain back control of our own destiny... platform.

The good news is, we have the content, the audience, the time and the internal backing. The bad news is, our team exists of two web-designer hacks that can make a great looking website using plugins galore but have very limited knowledge of server-side workings and code development.

Step 1 - Load Drupal 6 onto Lunar Pages DEDICATED server - COMPLETE
Step 2 - Join Users Group - COMPLETE
Step 3 - currently evaluating....

Question - Should we load Drupal 7 before moving on? (Lunar Pages has easy install for D6 but none for D7)

Cheers.

Step 3....

I really like Drupal 7 and have built multiple sites on it in recent months, however the only good way to answer that question is to really evaluate what tools you need on the site. While Drupal 7 has alot contributed modules that are out in varying stages there may be tools you need that haven't been ported yet to Drupal 7. If you just need the basics I would go with D7 but if you have some unique needs I would evaluate what modules you need and see if the D7 ones are there otherwise go D6.

I came from the design world and I will say that installing Drupal 6 or 7 is really easy without an automated script.

Thx...

Thanks for advice. We also have to upgrade to PHP 5.3.8. in order to do that. In process of doing both.

On a relevant note, I was alerted that by upgrading PHP I will no longer be compatible with the "Zen Optimizer". I initially installed the Zen stuff because of a PHP calendar I was using. I'm no longer using that particular calendar so I don't think losing Zen is going to hurt me but then again, I never even really knew what the heck it did.

Need I worry?

Yeah I agree with dax444. I would strongly suggest you go with D7 if you can as you'll have to eventually get there either way if your site will be around on Drupal for a while...
