User group meeting

Hey everyone, time for a Drupal Group meetup. We need a date, a location, a topic, and optionally, presenters.

I'll start with the date -- mid February. The 18th. Howzat sound?

Next we need a location. We could always do a social, like National Mechanics or Triumph, but people have been asking about doing something with more content, more show and tell and sharing of ideas, so a quieter place would be in order.

IndyHall charges $100 for evening rentals now, which I totally understand and find reasonable, but, if we can avoid it, it'd be nice not to have to pay. Anyone with ideas on a free place we could bring 10-20 people and talk Drupal? Ideally, around the corner from a place those same people could go and get a frothy beverage afterwards?

Finally, anyone have specific topics they'd like to see discussed, or something they'd be willing to present to others?

And any other ideas and suggestions welcome!
Please RSVP here if you're planning to attend.

UPDATE: The meeting will take place at ZivTech's office:
1511 South St.
Philadelphia, PA 19146
Phone: (267) 940-7737

I'd like to second the idea

I'd like to second the idea of having a quiet place. Not sure if Indy Hall is even an option. I understand they're doing evening hours now for their members.

I'm more than happy to contribute to pay for the room if there's a fee.

Do most people want it to be in Center City? I'll go if it is, but I know there's a lot of people in this group that live North and West.

Nate, do you think we should put up a poll and ask people where they want the meet up to be?

We'd be happy to host...

As always, we love guests! 20 people would be a bit crowded, but we could swing it.

(Simple[istic?]) presentation idea

I can't make it on the 18th, but as I'm not a regular attendee it probably doesn't make sense to shift things on my account. In any case, whether it's on a different date in February or at a future meetup, I could do a short piece on the work I've been doing on www.casinofreephila.org (D6 site).

There's nothing too fantastic about the setup, but one thing that occurred to me was my discovery of how easy it was to get Views2 to hook on to CCK's node_reference fields in an argument to display "reverse node reference" views (i.e. you create a content type called recipes with a node referrer of ingredients, and then at the bottom of every ingredient node you display a block view of recipes that refer to it). For instance, the related images on this page: http://www.casinofreephila.org/campaigns/2006/operation-transparency

If most of the folks who show up to the meetups are programmers this could all be utterly beneath them, and I confess to being mostly a theming-and-configuration person anyhow. But if it seems useful I'd be happy to run through it in a few minutes.

wysiwyg.module

Oh one other idea I had was to plug, almost as a public service announcement, wysiwyg.module. Although not technically in full release yet, I've been thrilled with it in conjunction with TinyMCE 3 -- the days of fiddling with broken code and an abandoned TinyMCE module are over! Nice features include much more fine-grained control over where and to whom the text editors are shown (meaning, for instance, you can have one text editor for administrators and another for anonymous users leaving comments).

I can't speak to how it plays with other text editors, but so far it's been a huge time-saver for me, and I'm recommending it to everyone.

Drupal + Flash / Basics of working with the Views 2 API

The 18th works for me! I like the idea of meeting at Zivtech, they have a nice office and it is in close proximity to a couple of bars for the aforementioned frosty beverage! I'd also be willing to chip in for Indy Hall, etc.

I could present some recent work I've done integrating Drupal with Flash via both XML and AMFPHP or on the basics of working with the Views 2 API (view specific settings, overriding the default render, the way plug-in .tpl files work by default, etc.). It's very easy to work with if you understand the basics of OOP.

New to this Group and would like to attend.

Feb 28 Drupal Meetup @ ZivTech

nategasser's picture

Alex has graciously offered ZivTech's office for a meeting, so let's plan to meet there (see body of post for address) And we're starting to get volunteers to show some things off. Please continue commenting below if you wish to present something -- can be 5-10 mins, nothing huge. Just complete a site in Drupal? Show it off! Working on something and have some questions? Stand up and show us your problem and I'm sure there will be folks ready and able to offer some creative ideas.

Don't forget to RSVP here if you're coming!

What's coming in Drupal 7

alex ua's picture

Looking forward to the meeting. We'd love to present on the upcoming (imo, Killer) release of Drupal 7, as well as on the patches that we helped land (you can find a partial list of our contributions to the upcoming release under the "Core Patches" on this page: http://www.zivtech.com/community/contributions).

Also- pizza? beer?
