DrupalCampNH is over!!!

After many months leading up to DrupalCampNH 2011, the day has finally come that it is past us, and now we can take a short bit to discuss the the good and bad, and how things might shape up next time!

I'd like to keep this short for now at this meetup... just a quick 30 min discussion at most... so that we may get back to the group, and discuss our general "need help withs" and "check this outs"...

Primary Topic/Presentation

This month, I'd like to see everyone come prepared (even just mentally) to either pose a question/issue they've ran across in the past month, or something cool/amazing they've discovered in the past month. There are plenty of questions out there, so let's make sure we know what they are so we can get them all answered at this month's meetup!!

Dinner & Drinks

After each meetup, we depart from the "structured" environment, and continue our discussions over beers and/or food at Pochito's Mexican Restaurant, Murphy's Tap Room, or possibly the Strange Brew. We look forward to seeing you all there!!

For those who got the Free

mkmagu's picture

For those who got the Free Acquia free cloud coupon and the OReilly Ebook have you had a chance to sign up? I tried the free cloud but got an error with the coupon code being either wrong or expired. For OReilly once you sign up I could not find anyplace that gave you the free ebook. Just wondering what others may have run into when signing up.

I don't know about the Aquia

rggoode's picture

I don't know about the Aquia offering. But the O'Reilly signup was pretty smooth, once you sign in.

It IS a little confusing at first, because there is no mention made of a free book or anything like that. But once you register and sign in with the site and revisit the page, the offer is fornt and center and the process is pretty easy. (although it helps if you do a little homework first to identify the book you want.)

Topic for meeting - Novice Contrib

BozHogan's picture

One thing I learned at the camp was that your d.o dashboard has a link to Novice Issues. I've tried to do it but immediately get lost. A short walk through of the Novice issue queue would be helpful.

Also, I know they need help with the documentation. I've read through gobs of pages on how to contribute to the documentation, but still don't really know where to start. Knowing the difference between the "handbook" and the rest of the documentation would be good too.

Good Topic!!

himerus's picture

Boz,

Great topic idea... Since DrupalCampNH and a good handful of sessions were targeted at contributing to Drupal, this would be something great to chat about, and maybe help sift through some of the jargon and barriers to entry for contributors.

Virtual Options

ppatterson-edc's picture

Hi everyone - it was really great to meet you all at Drupal Camp NH (great job, it was really impressive) - I'm looking forward to collaborating with you all. I was wondering, was there any more thought put into adding a virtual component to our meetups? I have an Adobe Connect Seminar Room license that can be used during this time, as well as a webcam/table top tripod to display live video. I know we had mentioned the wireless connections being weak; was there any more discussion about attempting to improve this?

If none of that works, I would like to propose either a) we stagger the nights we meet (we decide as a group the best night to meet on a monthly basis); b) change the regular night we meet; or c) hold a completely virtual meetup on another night - everyone just joins from their home/work.

I actually like the virtual solution, because ACP is persistent software - every time you go back to the meeting space, it remains intact - so you can have a running tally of notes, polls, etc. You can also record everything, so people can view after the fact.

Given I can't attend this

Given I can't attend this week, that'd be a nice option :)

Pat, I like the idea of a

tfhakala's picture

Pat,

I like the idea of a virtual meetup. At the end of a long work day, the drive to Manchester just isn't appealing as much as I enjoy getting together with everyone.

Definitely let's talk about it...

himerus's picture

I'd definitely like to have this discussion (both online, and at the meetup this week)

I'm open to anything that can help bring our community closer together, and understand the challenges of making meetups... I frequented the Boston meetups for quite some time, but eventually (and especially after taking on more responsibility w/the NH group), those meetups became just "too much" to attend...

I'm open to staggering nights, which HAS been brought up, and the only real "issues" with that will be coordinating with ABI hub to ensure we have the space on the 2nd Thursday of month 1, and the (for example) 2nd Tuesday of Month 2, repeating. Also there has (each time it has been mentioned) been issues with the non-standard day as it could/would cause confusion on exactly which day it would fall on the following month...

All in all, on the topic of staggering nights, I think the fact is that no matter what day it is on someone is going to be unable to attend.

I'm very open to figuring out, in our world of tech and streaming how we can accomodate our meetups via adobe connect/webex/skype/etc. I think this IS a good solution that can make the meetups accessible to all...

There are a couple things that are problematic with that (IMHO) as well....

First, as discussed, the WiFi at ABI hub is an issue.... perhaps we can figure out how to help them (even if it means buying them a new router(s) and/or configuring their routers to work right) and make their WiFi work a bit better so that it is reliable night after night. That seems like an easy solution, and would be a good "gift" back to ABI Hub for them allowing us to continue to take over the conference room every month free of charge.

One thing that would scare me if each meetup was streamed live is that our in-person attendance could drop off almost completely, leaving Michelle and I sitting there alone in the conference room... I know the drive that many of our "regulars" make is daunting, even if only once a month.

Another "tiny" issue with a virtual conference/meeting/etc. would be (i think) is let's say we have 10 ppl in the room in person, and 10+ online "attending" the meetup... mkay... how do we balance things like questions/time to speak/etc. with those NOT directly in the room?

I do feel (regardless of ANY reservations) that the virtual meetup streaming could/would be of benefit, and who knows, we could easily get a good crowd to participate.

Let's definitely add this discussion to tomorrow nights agenda to discuss (with those that are there in person) and continue this online as well... perhaps it should be posed in a new discussion thread?? (and I could then amend this response there as well)

Re: Definitely let's talk about it...

Note that video stream is extremely bandwidth intensive. Does anyone have an account/server that supports it? (And it would be nice to record too).

BTW: Most of the proprietary video "chat" doesn't support Linux, which I use almost to the exclusion of all else. So I would encourage using something that allows Linux.

Also, if no one comes to the meeting, and only uses the video channel - do we really need a traditional "meetup"/physical location? We could perhaps modify the SignUp form to include if people will be attending via video or physically.

Video broadcast and network help

perignon's picture

Hey Everyone,

I'm very new to the group here, new to Drupal too, but I happen to know a lot about the topics being discussed here. I will be at the meetup tomorrow so I can chat about this in person to. What got me here is I am moving a very larger site off of another platform onto Drupal. Just happens that the site I am moving is a video instructional website.

I broadcast video around the world both on-demand and streaming of live shows that we do almost once a month. So I'm pretty versed in video broadcasting over the internet, it's stupid easy which is cool.

As to bandwidth, it doesn't require a lot but just requires what you do have available is steady. We broadcast in HD with just 1mbps up. I have broadcast (testing) live from Panera Bread OVER a vpn back to my house! So that gives you some idea of how little BW you need to broadcast - it only has to be steady and not fluctuate.

On the camera side, it's easy to do. Any DV or web cam can be used and Adobe Media Encoder Live is free to use to compress and upload the video to the receiving RTMP server.

As to the server to broadcast with, that's made super easy with Amazon AWS and WOWZA licensing. $5 a month for the WOWZA server license and you pay for what you use in bandwidth. I used this when we got started doing live broadcasts. I now use a full up worldwide CDN (Edgecast) that websites like Yahoo and Tumblr use. Then just use freebie JWPlayer to broadcast it over a website. Just need a telecon line for people to dial into which we could get from http://www.freeconferencecall.com/ or some of the other free services out there - they just don't provide you with a toll free number which usually isn't too much of an issue in this day and age.

And there is yet another resouces. https://join.me/ <-- this works on Linux I think, it's just flash.

Also, on the networking side. I can help there too. I'm about to have a spare 1U machine laying around that I have used to build custom Linux firewalls to be managed with FWBuilder. Lot more reliable and solid that your store bought small firewalls out of the box. Or we could even take what they have and fix it up (if it's a broadcom based firewall then we could load Tomato or DD-WRT onto it). Plus I have two Cisco PIX 501's I could donate if none of the above works out (the custom linux box is honestly more reliable).

I'm willing to help either way. Does not take long to do any of it, you will be amazed how simple it is!

FYI... I'm fastglassllc on

BozHogan, #include beer.h is what you looking for. ;)

FYI, I will do my best to attend virtually tonight but I have class this evening so it will be sans video and in stealth mode so my teacher doesn't get offended. Hopefully, CDIABU hasn't blocked G+.
