Need volunteer to moderate groups submissions

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
moshe weitzman's picture

I'm looking for a few volunteers to look at new groups as they are created and approve them when they meet these conditions:

  • have readable names, descriptions, etc.
  • are not overlapping too much with existing groups
  • are properly categorized (working group vs. geographical group vs. ?)

These guidelines will be further developed over time. If you are interested, please reply here or send me an email. This will be a big gift to our community, and your name will be mentioned on the forthcoming About page.

How to create groups?

Jaza's picture

I don't see where I can submit new groups on this site. Even if I manually go to 'node/add/group', I get nothing. Perhaps I don't have the 'create groups' privilege? If so, could I please get it?

@Moshe: I already sent you an email about this - would appreciate it if someone could look into it. I'd like to establish an SIG called 'Relationships & Site Structuring', but can't do so at the moment.

Guidelines posted

I have added some help to the node/add/og page with group creation guidelines. Lets make sure new groups adhere to these guidelines before approval.

checking for unfinished work

greggles's picture

Great - thanks moshe. Every now and then I go into admin/node and filter for nodes in "not published" and see none and move on. Is there some other way to get notification that there is work to be done? Something like adminblock? If adminblock needs a patch to cover "show me unpublished nodes" (I forget how it works at the moment) I'd be happy to help.

If I could subscribe to emails of new OG nodes that would work just as well - I think subscription can handle that, but it opens up other overhead.

Would a view of unpublished

merlinofchaos's picture

Would a view of unpublished nodes of type group be sufficient? It could be a block (with more link) to a page, restricted to the proper role. And we could make the block optional so that those who aren't into approving groups don't need to see it.

That sadly doesn't include email notification, but it'll be easy to see. We'd probably want some way to actively reject groups too, though, so they don't appear in the queue. That's starting to look like workflow stuff, which might be going overboard. And yet...

very cool

moshe weitzman's picture

should be an optional block for editor role. can you create this one when you get a chance?

Ok, created. Some minor

merlinofchaos's picture

Ok, created. Some minor problems:

1) The moderation queue flag doesn't actually do anything in 4.7; we need to modify views where necessary to remove groups in moderation from general visibility. I think that only means 'groups' and 'my groups' really. (Note zacker's newest group, screencasters, which shows up even though the moderated flag is set).

2) I didn't think about this, but the block can't be made optional without making it visible to all users, since the code to restrict a block to roles isn't in yet, that particular piece of code doesn't know to not show the block to users who can't access it. So everyone with editor access will see it.

3) I named the URL groups/moderated, but that's making a help tip show up in the view. Can probably just rename the URL but not sure if that's the right thing to do and if so, what to rename it.

4) Sure would be nice to have a mini module that adds a link to nodes to flip the moderated (and heck, published) flags that's only visible to people with the right role. The module to do it would be tiny tiny but would be extremely useful. I may just write it and contribute it. (I hate the flow where one has to edit a node to make minor changes like that to it).

On point number 2, can’t

greggles's picture

On point number 2, can't you do "users cannot control whether or not they see this block" and make it a really heavy weighting and use this snippet:

<?php
global $user;
if (
in_array('Editors', $user->roles))
{return (
'TRUE');}
?>

Editing the 'Editors' string to be the proper value?

Ok, yea, that would likely

Ok, yea, that would likely work, I think.

ok, some fixes

About making life easy for the moderators - a reply to merlinofchaos' issues

1: i meant for new groups to remain unpublished while they are waiting. So I just edited the content-types page or og so that groups are both in moderation and unpublished initially. in order to approve, you check published and uncheck moderation queue. in order to reject, you uncheck moderation queue and leave unpublihsed. i will periodically clean out these nodes .. I removed the published filter from the View.

2: I just removed the block part of the View. Folks can bookmark that page, or add it to their RSS reader. Let me know if that becomes a burden.

3: I removed that stray helptip ... I tried to add a tab for this page to Groups but no luck. Can you investigate, Earl?

4: Well, what I really want is for someone to redo admin/node so that any view can be plugged in but that is a bit larger project. The complex part of admin.node is the filering stuff which Views alreaady handles so maybe it isnt too bad.

updates

moshe weitzman's picture

i actually fixed content ypes so groups go in the moderation queue and then i approved 2 groups that were pending. i also fixed the tabs config so now the pending moderation page is a tab on the usual groups page (for editors) ... if someone can figure out how to restrict the the option of showing this block to just editors then please tell merlinofchaos or myself and we will implement. i did not follow the suggestion posted thus far.
