I was just reading this article on NewTeeVee ( http://newteevee.com/2009/02/27/a-cdn-for-the-people-by-the-people/ ) and was thinking about the impressive implications for this for the Open Media Project.
The idea is simple - locate NAS devices with media files on them inside as many high-speed connected locations as possible. Offer benefits to those agreeing to locate the content at their location.
I'm thinking that this might be a good scheme for PEG organizations. We generally have more bandwidth than we need (at least that's my story and I am sticking with it until proved otherwise), have some capability to assess/determine computer hardware problems (we could at least reboot a NAS if it locked up), and we have some local potential uses for the media as well, since the media could be used locally for broadcast.
Paired with technology like Miro, and the database/content listing potential of Drupal/Open Media, I think this could have some serious implications. I know it's not a new concept, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad one.
Any thoughts?
