Crazy meeting idea - a field trip?

BozHogan's picture

I've started getting involved in the Boston Initiative, only been to 2 of their 3 meetings so far. Tuesday they announced a special 2 hour meeting that coincides with our meet-up. Angela Byron a.k.a "webchick" will be flying in to host this special event in Cambridge. The Boston Initiative is a group that meets for the first hour of the Boston Dug monthly meeting and works on building Drupal 8. You can read more at http://groups.drupal.org/node/180809 .

The meetings are for coders and beginners alike. In fact they have a ladder ( available here: www.bit.ly/drupal-ladder ), which at the bottom is for non-coders and as you progress up you can learn about how to contribute, learn about coding, see how drupal gets built, or dive right in and climb up higher on the ladder where you are actually making changes or bug fixes to core. It's also a good way to learn about what is coming up in Drupal''s future.

Webchick will be hosting the event. She is probably the most famous name in Drupal, short of Dries himself. You can read about her here: http://buytaert.net/angela-webchick-byron .

Also, at each event, new people are catered to. There is a separate section for people who are just getting started, getting Drupal 8, setting up, etc. So no one need worry they feel left behind!

If people are interested, this would be a unique opportunity, and since it falls on our meeting night, I thought we might do something different and have this be in place of the meeting this month. A field trip of sorts!

It's at MIT, from 6:30 - 8:30, and in Drupal meetup fashion, will probably continue at a nearby bar. If people are interested, I'll post a better link with details when I find one or when it's made.

Actually, the time's 6:00 - 9:00 PM

MBR's picture

I just received email about this meeting, and you've got everything right except the time. In the announcement at http://groups.drupal.org/node/200363, it says it's 6:00 - 9:00 PM. I wouldn't want you to drive all that way, only to end up arriving 1/2 hour late.

The building (E51, a.k.a. the Tang Center) is on the corner of Wadsworth and Amherst Sts. (http://whereis.mit.edu/?go=E51)

Although the announcement says parking is available after 5:00 PM in the Hayward Street lot (http://whereis.mit.edu/?go=P5), occasionally when I've tried to park there before 6:30 there's been a guard on duty who won't let anyone in without MIT ID. If the Hayward St. lot doesn't work out, you might try the lot immediately adjacent to bldg. E51. I've often parked there for software user group meetings in E51, and I've never had a problem. But try the Hayward Street lot first, because it has more space than the bldg E51 lot.

Thanks

Thanks Mark,

I was just here to post the link and you beat me to it, and with more updated info to boot.

I would love to go, but being

I would love to go, but being a work night and far from home keeps me from participating in it. If this were Friday night I would be in for it.

Questionable driving conditions tomorrow evening

Bob Newby's picture

Hi Jake,

It's likely that the driving conditions between Portsmouth and Manchester will be too treacherous for me to make tomorrow's meeting in person.

So, I'll need instructions for joining the virtual side of the meetup.

Thanks,

Bob

In the same boat...

ttamniwdoog's picture

I'm in the same boat as Bob. Winter Storm Watch in effect. I'll plan to attend remotely. Thanks.

I think the weather will keep

mkmagu's picture

I think the weather will keep me home as well. Not sure if I can access the remote connection because the weather will impact my Internet connection but I'm willing to give it a try.

considering cancelling

himerus's picture

I'm considering (because of the weather) canceling this meetup with the number already that aren't going to make the drive...

If you can give me some report here of if you would/would not make the drive tonight, that will help me in making a decision...

thanks!

I live on Rt 3 so I was

perignon's picture

I live on Rt 3 so I was coming to the meeting but getting their early to avoid rush hour traffic. Still willing to come if we have enough people. I do have the Git demo ready too - more prepared this time around :)

I'm not going to make the

I'm not going to make the drive tonight.

I'm planning on coming,

I'm planning on coming, despite the snow, but may have to change plans for family reasons. So I'm a maybe. Sorry... that doesn't help.

I won't make it either...

kfrench@gmilcs.org's picture

I'm on the road today and my last library is closer to my house than Manchester so I suspect, considering driving and subsequent snow removal, I'll end up heading home.

Then sadly...

himerus's picture

Then sadly, I think the best course of action is to cancel the meetup this month... I don't want anyone on the road (even though I don't think it'll get THAT bad) to come for the meetup and be out driving home late tonight ...

We'll reconvene and meet on schedule in Feb... @Perignon if you'll still do your Git discussion then, that'd be great!!

I think that's the right

Bob Newby's picture

I think that's the right decision. See you all next month.

Adobe Connect?

ppatterson-edc's picture

Hi gang - sorry I haven't been in touch, things have been crazy lately. I can set up the Adobe Connect room and we can do this remotely for anyone interested tonight (same details as last month); I will set up the room - I'll open it up at 5:30pm:

https://edc.adobeconnect.com/drupalnh

Just click the radio button that says "Log in as a Guest" and you should be able to get in, no problem.

Whoops!

ppatterson-edc's picture

I wrote that while Jake was writing his - are we interested in doing this purely online because of the weather?

I was about to propose this

perignon's picture

I was about to propose this too. I'd be up for it if we cancel the in person. I would be happy to do the Git demo over adobe connect.. I do this kind of crap for my day job alllll the time.

Oh well, I was coming

BruceDawson's picture

I was going to be a few blocks away in Manchester anyway and had planned on coming. But maybe I'll try the adobeconnect room.

I was looking forward to attending, as well!

jb467gm3x's picture

Can anyone tell me the date/time/location of the next Drupal meetup? I will look forward to meeting you all then.

February meeting

damienmckenna's picture

The February meeting should be on the 9th from 5:30 to 8pm, but we'll have to wait for Himerus or miche to confirm the date.

Won't make it

BozHogan's picture

I'm stuck in Boston till it's over. Going to the Webchick Drupal 8 event tonight, anyway. See you next month!

So I was finally going to be back...

gstout's picture

.. but now I might go to the Boston meetup. It really depends on how tired I am at the end of the day and how the drive is looking.

Next Meetup & Online tonight

himerus's picture

Yes, the next meetup will the the 9th of Feb at the time Damien mentioned... I'll work on posting that announcement in the next day or so.

Also, yes, if it's possible, let's try to have the meetup virtually tonight just so it's not a total loss. I will likely not be able to make it (even virtually) with some other obligations now with client deadlines, so Pat, if you can kick this off, and see if it's at all possible to get a group participating 100% remote, then great!!

Otherwise, let's pick up next month on the 9th, and hopefully the weather doesn't play any issue here.

We are LIVE

ppatterson-edc's picture

We are online, listening to Brady Owens' presentation on GIT - just started!
