A great way to build Drupal's presence in your region is to start a Google Map of everyone in your country using Drupal.
Unfortunately, Australia doesn't have as many big name players sporting Drupal as yet, but this is only a matter of time as the Drupal community spreads like wild fire. As global offices start sharing the love with their in-market counterparts down under, we think it important for them to have clear visibility of the support structure surrounding their decision to migrate. We thought long and hard about ways to let "Mary the Manager" know that Drupal is a serious proposition with a substantial supporting eco-system and realised that a map clearly showing the number of Drupal businesses was a great way to "put Drupal on the map" for her, literally!
We managed the icons according to person, bricks and mortar businesses, etc: http://groups.drupal.org/node/13977
Here's what we have so far: http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&source=embed&msa=0&msid=...
A decision that we made from the start was to review every person on the list. We won't list a consultant/business if we can't identify them through their Drupal reputation, via a reference or their web presence. This is very time consuming, we don't know if this will work in the long term, but at least we're very confident that if someone uses the list they won't be mislead.
In contrast, here's one generated from moderated user-submitted data (from GDO!), which results in a fairly green means that this list, in effect, stays clean by its self:

(There are a few other examples floating around that are basically unmoderated lists of Drupal fans, which is nice, but may not help any serious marketing effort.)
I've forwarded our map to Development Seed as an idea for the Drupal.com website, but on a global scale. It would be great to see everyone on a map like this. I wonder if this is something that the Drupal Association might want to do and we also think this would be a great idea for Acquia to do with their partner list. What do you think?
