There is now an issue for this: http://drupal.org/node/1889134 - changes should be tracked over there.

Here is a very rough start an outline for a 2.0-alpha1 release

The following is a proposal based on conversations with folks working on the Media module and hopes to establish some clarity on what needs to get done to have releasable code. At this time we should probably consider Media 2.0 feature frozen in order to address the major bugs in the issue queue.

At the top of the list any bugs that are related to upgrades need to be addressed. This list includes at least the following issues:
* File types undefined after module upgrade http://drupal.org/node/1846518
* Enable embedding of any file type http://drupal.org/node/1792738
* UI for adding/removing file types http://drupal.org/node/1260050
* Record file usage: http://drupal.org/node/1268116
* Document this markup change: http://drupal.org/node/1872420
* "You have not selected anything!" error message http://drupal.org/node/1743040 also http://drupal.org/node/1833742
* Remove edit modal from media browser when uploading a new file, since file upload is now a multi-step process http://drupal.org/node/1848034
* URL of file formatter fails in all view modes: http://drupal.org/node/1886722

Of lesser importance might be:
* Code cleanup http://drupal.org/node/1887576
* Browser permission http://drupal.org/node/992978
* Remove unusued files http://drupal.org/node/1883670
* Fix JS error: http://drupal.org/node/1883210

Lower priority:
* Write additional simple tests: http://drupal.org/node/1026602
* Browser cleanup: http://drupal.org/node/1881152
* Consistent markup: http://drupal.org/node/1885432 and http://drupal.org/node/1506674

Offer to help with UX, UI and usability

Thanks @artrurf. Great list of issues blocking an alpha release.

I agree we need to have a feature freeze so to be able to get a stable 2.0 out as soon as possible. Missing features simple will have to wait to point releases, otherwise we get stuck in dev forever.

As I mentioned in IRC, my community initiative Drupal SBUI, http://community.drupalmill.org/sbui-pm, is offering to help with the UX, UI and usability stuff in a more official form. Lets talk more on how we can collaborate efficiently on that.
