I finished up the Drupal Simply page (what, how, why with suggested additional reading) today over at the dojo site and promoted it to a book. However when I was re-reading it and trying for beginner eyes I began to wonder if people would understand the words display engine and tried to find what Drupalers called it and couldn't find anything other then Theme. Does anyone know what this part of the system is called other then Theme? I am going to replace display engine with theme engine, but wondered if there was something else it was called.

I'm not sure either
However, the display engine is separate and distinct from the theme engine. Some where around 4.6, the phpTemplate theme engine became standard. However the display engine has been there a lot longer. Perhaps Steven Peck can point us to a better dsitinction.

I guess the question I
I guess the question I should be asking is, what would be understood the best and allow for further understanding down the line for someone new to Drupal? I want to use a term that suggests to the reader how it is going to look, how it's displayed, and the thing that is doing that. I also want to make sure I'm using a term that will mean something to them when they start reading other stuff at drupal.org so this builds the terminology that will be used other places. That's why I was thinking I should use Theme Engine because later reading is going to be talking about Themeing vs display.

My take
My take is that is the theme engine, where is the display engine. What I'm confused on in this discussion is where do we include the part about getting the data accumulated to display.

The Theme engine or Display
The Theme engine or Display engine does the querying and presenting. You can separate them out, but from what I listened to today the "core" engine does both, of course I could have misunderstood.

I never wrote anything in
I never wrote anything in PHP, and if you consider that I just use Drupal for learning purpose and I have just made only 1 Production Site for a Friend, I can consider my self from the learning Curve of Drupal-Terminology: a Beginner.
For that under Display engine I will first see an Motor Engine that have the capability of Displaying something on the display. Of course if I made a google define: search, I will understand that
an engine in this case is not a Motor engine for cars, but a series of procedure that will build something as a product that after will be displayed on the Display.
I hope this Feedback from a student of Drupal point of view, helps.
