New, redesigned drupal.org theme

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

What's your idea?

Redesign drupal.org's theme to be more modern and cater to mobile devices.

What are the benefits?

Drupal.org becomes responsive out of the box with an opportunity to 'refresh' the way the website looks. Perhaps a 'flat design' or some friendlier UI re-arranging. Most developers don't seem to care, but a fresh face could attract new people and make Drupal more appealing by showcasing how beautiful a theme can be in Drupal. It would be a good opportunity to put a new face out before Drupal 8 is released.

What are the risks?

The effort to make this change is far-reaching given the size of the website.

How can we measure the impact of this idea? (metrics)

I think everyone would agree that uncluttering the issue queue interface and other interfaces (perhaps improving the navigation) would help newcomers and veterans alike in utilizing drupal.org to its fullest extent.

Who directly benefits from / will use this improvement? (target audiences)

Everyone? Not sure how to answer that any other way.

Are additional resources available for discovery/implementation? (volunteer effort, financial backing, etc.)

I do not know how much work went into the current theming of d.o. but obviously the answer is yes. But with an established/responsive theme it seems like seasoned themers can cut through it quickly.

Additional Notes

Sites I came across that I could envision d.o. looking like:

Yes, I put Lullabot on there. I think d.o. can be as beautiful as sites like these while enhancing the UI.

It sounds like you're

It sounds like you're proposing "Make the Drupal.org theme responsive" rather than "Redesign the theme entirely" — am I reading that correctly? It might not hurt to clarify that in the title.

Also, I'd personally prefer to see reference to specific implementation removed (the 'Foundation 4.x' bits)... You've made your preference known, but let's look at the goal first; if this makes it to the roadmap, then we can consider the implementation.

Oops, nope, I see I misread...

...and it is indeed about a totally redesigned theme. Clarified that in the title.

Here are the edits I made:

Feel free to clarify further if those are incorrect.

Yes. A redesign + responsive

Yes. A redesign + responsive theme. I figure with the pending release of Drupal 8 it is a good opportunity to reface and modernize the site (since other UX ideas are posted). I gravitated toward Foundation just to float the idea out there.

IMO Bluecheese is already

IMO Bluecheese is already amazing.

In what way? Seems like it

In what way? Seems like it would go with this idea:

It's not that long at all

joachim's picture

It's not that long at all since d.org got a new theme. And that took a VERY long time to design and implement (IIRC the ball started rolling back at DrupalCon Szeged). So I think there are other improvements we should focus on before we turn to the d.org theme once again.

Though making the current theme responsive is very definitely needed!

Redesigning drupal.org is

Redesigning drupal.org is already on the Content Working Group's roadmap, but will naturally require coordination with the other working groups to implement.

Following this issue to hear what ideas folks have and in particular what pain points exist with the current site.

I love Drupal and I love open

I love Drupal and I love open source. I find the closed nature of Bluecheese problematic and disheartening. I'd love a new design and I hope that any redesign can reflect our core, open source, values.

Also mobile first. ;)

Hence the suggestion of

Hence the suggestion of possibly adopting a larger framework in the Foundation/Bootstrap class. In order to assist with say Bluecheese, you'd have to have inherent knowledge of how that specific theme works. It's true both ways, but on the other side of the fence with a non-Drupal grid system, the knowledge is a lot more documented.

It's a shame this proposal

It's a shame this proposal didn't get more love from the community; those most voted for seem very dev oriented xD. Personally I don't think bluecheese is a good representation of what Drupal is capable of theme wise. We did an unsolicited design based around what we thought was the most important part, the community.

Sadly it seems this won't be up for discussion again until after the next release? Hopefully we can get some more push then.

Don't assume that just

gdemet's picture

Don't assume that just because a redesign wasn't prioritized in this survey that it isn't happening; there are multiple working groups responsible for various aspects of Drupal.org, and a redesign of the site is on the roadmap of the Content Working Group, which I chair. There is some foundational work (content audit, strategy, etc.) required before a redesign can happen, but this is the goal toward which we are working.

If you're interested in getting involved, you can help out by being part of the landing page research and development that we're currently working on: https://groups.drupal.org/node/314273 - This work is a precursor to the larger work of a full site redesign and overhaul.
