Hello folks - I posted a while back about hosting providers and when https://www.siteground.com/ offered existing users a new site for $9.95 for the 1st year I pulled the trigger. I have used them for my personal/sandbox account and had been satisfied. If anyone is interested I can send a link for the special offer.
http://www.montevallofbc.com/ is the site and I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas. It has just gone live so not much content - I hope some of the leaders will contribute better content, but they did not with the old site... I especially would appreciate a theme recommendation that you like for churches.
I am very happy to get this done, it will make my job easier and I am optimistic I can get a least a couple of people to help with content now that they can use the nice Drupal interface.
Merry Christmas to each of you.
John

If you don't plan on having too much in the left or right column (right now there isn't) I would go to a two-column layout (with a right OR left column, and then a content area).
Also, I would make it fixed with only because when I look at it fully stretched out on my widescreen monitor I see a huge picture in the content area with not much text. You may also want to try making those photos smaller thumbnails and then the user can click on it for a bigger version.
I hope you don't take what I say negatively! You've done a lot of work I can tell!
One last thing, I personally don't like the color choices of "Duke" blue and burgundy? Those do not complement one another at all. Not trying to be an ass, but something like that could make a "seeker" not visit your church.
I can't recommend any prepackaged themes, I do all mine custom using http://drupal.org/project/ninesixty
Keep at it. I've been working on my church's website for over a year now and I still am not done! :\
Thanks for the feedback
I appreciate the ideas and suggestions and do not take offense. I am no expert on web design or Drupal so I need all the help I can get. I joined the church 1.5 years ago and the site was really bad, at least now it can at least grade as "needs improvement" rather than "poor". :-)
Your idea to reduce the teaser image size is a good one, I'll implement that in the next revision. I plan to do a view/block to reformat the stories more to my liking and will include a teaser image.
I do have plans for the margins so I'll leave them but since I have zero experience with theming, so I have to stick to prepackaged ones for now. I I did change the theme to a blue if you have time to check it again... www.montevallofbc.com
Thanks for your time...
Of all the themes to choose from!
Hi John,
I too am building out a new Drupal website with a team of folks - I'm the only "technical guy" so a lot is falling on my shoulders to get it started. I was excited and curious to see your new site but I confess my jaw dropped when I saw the theme. It's the exact one I'm currently playing with for our site - I installed it in our sandbox site yesterday! In our case, people liked something similar so I figured it would be a good starting point to build upon. This isn't our first attempt at a website though - it's the fourth! One thing different is that we've been blessed with "momentum" such that I've now got a team working with me on the site and who will maintain it going forward. Let's pray it's not a horse designed by a committee (a.k.a. a camel)!
I agree with Branjawn's comment regarding the two column versus three. Since I'm no expert, I would like to offer some suggestions where I've been getting information from. First is the Using Drupal book written by the Lullabot team (http://www.amazon.com/Using-Drupal-Angela-Byron/dp/0596515804/) as well as the Lullabot site. Also, the Geeks and God podcasts (http://geeksandgod.com/) have at least a dozen or more episodes devoted to Drupal. One of the podcast hosts also has videos on his other site called Mustard Seed Media (http://mustardseedmedia.com/).
We'll be going live next month and I'll share the link here as well.
Merry Christmas and God Bless!
Glad you have a team...
My team meetings do not take up much space... I was hopeful one of the college students would be a web techie or a graphics designer and help me out but so far it is just me. I also use Newsflash on www.al911.org and I like it so I started with it for the church. I also like Pixture Reloaded - I'm experimenting with it on my sandbox.
I'm considering going to a single column in a future revision. My first goal was to get the site ported so maintenance was not such a choir. If I never open Expression Web or Frontpage again it will be fine. Now that I have it in Drupal I can tweak the design and layout without re-working the content.
I'll look forward to seeing your site.
more input
I think the theme you have is fine. Fine enough :) If you wanted to make it a two column layout, I'm pretty sure all you would need to do is go to admin > blocks and move the MFBC Schedule block to the left column. The right column, with nothing in it, should disappear.
As for my church's new site, it will go "live" in about 2 weeks.
Here is the old church site (try not to vomit!) www.fellowshipofchrist.org
Here is the new site I am working on: www.foc4u.org
Feel free to click around, keep in mind I'm actively working on it though! Also, there is some content that is only available to authorized (logged in) persons.
Thanks for any critique.
Brandon, The new site looks
Brandon,
The new site looks very slick and polished! One question I have is what your reasoning was for not using one of the Flash Player techniques to allow people to listen to sermons online. I know you've got a "true" podcast page w/ RSS feed that enables subscription and download. Just curious if you know or thought of something that I haven't run across yet regarding playing online. :) Also the contact link for Mitchell Bowyer on the Music Ministry page gives a 404 error.
I'm sold on the 960 GS but don't feel confident that I know enough to make it look good in addition to learning Drupal all at once. Your new site is encouraging to me because it looks so good.
Congratulations on your hard work and success vis-a-vis old vs. new!
great jog
I like the new site. What are you using to do the slideshow on the front page?
Thanks, Dave.
Views_Slideshow
I don't know if this is helpful or not, but I am at this moment studying a video lecture on DrupalTherapy.com on views_slideshow. It might help you with the slideshow component.

The site looks great
Branjawn -
The site looks great. Nice colors and all that. The navigation is easy to understand. I can see that you've really put some hard work into this site.
The only thing that I can see that might need tweaking is the Logo. It is better to use CSS image replacement techniques for it than to use the standard Drupal logo upload.

Regarding presentation of
Regarding presentation of sermons or podcasts, we don't even digitally record our sermons yet! haha. I merely set up a quick page to encourage the A/V team to get moving on that technology. Yes, when we actually get sermons available I will devote more time to the presentation of those.
Thanks for the 404 error tip. I made a change a few months ago with Pathauto or Clean URLS (can't remember) and it messed up a lot of relative paths. I hope the link you pointed out is the last broken link!
Do you use Photoshop? Somewhere, there exists a 960 overlay for Photoshop that makes it quite easy to sketch a mock-up website and turn it into a real site. 960 is easy to learn, unlike other theme packages though, you HAVE to do some reading to learn how to properly modify it. Download it and give it a test drive. Just be sure to read the README file first!
You didn't answer dmullens'
@Branjawn
You didn't answer dmullens' question on the "slideshow". I would like to know the same. And also, I was confused at first about the slideshow & "upcoming". I thought they were somehow connected. But it was made clear to me when I realized "upcoming" is a separate block.
I am currently working on the enhancements of http://www.salvation123.com
I'd appreciate any tips and tricks to make the site better.
Thanks.
Views Slideshow
Views slideshow is what I use for all of my sites.
I used it on these two:
Text slideshow using views for the endorsements: http://www.thediscipleshipdare.com
Recent projects slideshow: http://www.amentcreative.com
Thanks again for the good
Thanks again for the good tips on 960. I'm a developer rather than a themer so my inclin`ation is to reuse what I can find rather than start from scratch. I also "dread" that part of it which means I can always find code and such to tinker with instead of tackling the design work ;) Alas, I'll only be able to put it off until I get some free time over the holiday stretch then we'll have to wrap it up and something will be delivered. I'll look for the PSD overlay as well.
I use views slideshow. In
I use views slideshow. In bed, will give a more detailed response later :)
Thanks for the recommendation
Thanks for the recommendation of views slideshow. It looks great. I am going to try using it on a new church design I am working on tonight.
Thanks much!
