The google hangout is something new we're trying. Please post a comment below to get an invite if you are interested in attending.

Glad there's a 180 on that,

Glad there's a 180 on that, this was a massively limiting issue in the past, at least for me when I would have had to do Saint-Hilaire-Montreal in less than 15 minutes just because.

"Should communication/event participation be restricted to membership in any way?"

Can we have some context on that ? Who is proposing such an exclusionary idea and why ?

The agenda item in question

mirabuck's picture

The agenda item in question is a paraphrasing of a suggestion by board member Marc Tetreault. I'll leave it to Marc to explain this further at Friday's meeting, but I will say that the Montreal Drupal Association's mandate remains unchanged and includes serving the Montreal Drupal community in its entirety.

Thanks for the context. I'm

Thanks for the context. I'm personally uneasy with any decision that turns the Association inward rather than outwards as it seems to contradict in practice its mandate. It also fosters and justifies a common assertion that the association is cliqueish already.

Louis-Eric, note that nobody proposed the idea...

omar's picture

... it was a question, as the question mark clearly indicated in the minutes of that meeting.

I too would be uneasy with any decision that would "turn the Association inward" and am happy to confirm/assert that no decision was made in this sense, neither at that meeting or any previous one.

There is thus no justification for your assertion that the association is cliquish.... especially considering how many new people have been participating.

Moreover, this is not a constructive contribution to a thread that is actively aimed at inviting people to participate. Nor is this the first time that you engage in such demeaning commentary since you were not re-elected to the board.

Please, if you'd like to participate, just accept the invitation, let bygones be bygones and show up for a constructive meeting... we need all the positive energy we can get. If you no longer want to participate, fine, but please refrain from making remarks that may discourage others from doing so.

Cliqueish: I asked a few people during my sales calls -- people that we never see at DrupalCamp -- why they were not participating and what could be done to accommodate them. The last camp was, give or take, the same faces as the year before which made me wonder if the market was stagnant. It is not, it is growing, but people do not come; why ? So I asked. And that comment came up a few times. That and a somewhat outdated perception (at least given last year's efforts) that the event is not bilingual. So I do think there is a communication challenge there to have the message meet with the efforts. The last strata of non-participants is people for whom Drupal is a job but not a passion -- that's a good sign of deeper penetration in the working ranks -- so they do not wish to give up weekend days for "work", which is fair enough. Free market research. You are welcome.

As for my non-participation: I just posted something which was misconstrued as a potential criticism (it is not, reread the original post in context) and I got this disgracious response in return about possible motives and other ad hominem what-nots. That stuff makes me retch. I like to say what I think openly and without politics, and your response just brought back the kind of unpleasant memories I could do without. Good luck though.

The "work" people might be

MisterSpeed's picture

The "work" people might be excited by free trainings on Thursday, but that's an impression rather than hard data. If that is offered and I'm in the country, I could easily give that in both languages. Would be good to have EvolvingWeb on board too as that looks like their USP nowadays.

Perception

EMHmark7's picture

OK, maybe not in your mind but, yes, like other posts from others and even my owns, were interpreted negatively. So, I think, unless it is urgent if the comment is about being puzzled about something, posts should mainly be about new useful info, for the rest, better wait to talk about it in person where misinterpretations can be detected and solved right away. It will also avoid the avalanche of reply posts about: No, you misinterpreted, etc.

Bottom of the line, about positive drive, even if I agree a bit that Omar has his way to interpret the past that does not help (sorry Omar to say that),
I invite you to come to the next Demo evening. My intention is to start a series of prepared and structured talks about the community. Real questions for real answers.

Mainly: How can we maximize, for everyone, the advantage of being part of a Drupal community. From then, I hope, people with similar goals will be able to act in synergy. Maybe you will like that part!

Look*, I see a topic about

MisterSpeed's picture

Look*, I see a topic about whether there should be limitations to participation based on membership, I ask what this is about and warn that this ties in with a perception that should be addressed. This is topical, and is a valid question in and of itself even if it is not asked specifically between 6:30 and 8:30 pm in front of a smaller audience.

Asking a question and discussing it IS community participation. I am not sure by which twist of reasoning participation has now been defined as opposing participation, whereas silence on the boards would be so much better ? It defies all logic.

*(I am responding to the vibe of the last replies rather than specifically to Marc)

Marc: of course it would be awesome to be able to team up with like-minded people and just do things. I would love that.

You are confirming

EMHmark7's picture

Look! You are confirming what I am trying to say, that a forum is a great place for misinterpretation, especially if we read things with a negative POV. That is why, hum, the best is a phone call, a meetup in person, etc for discussion. The idea is not to prevent anything from anybody. Reading such comments, with all my good will, I think it sucks time and energy. That is why, you juuuuuuuut neeeeeeed to to read positively and add positively. You can even have the idea to add comments that are short and not go in details in how things seems to be negative, although you can point it out. At the end, what words are ok for you, so we can write without another negative reply? I won't reply anymore on this question or any negative comment other than in person. So, be in-person if you wish.

Limiting or not the Association in some ways

EMHmark7's picture

Hi,

I think I am at the origin of the topic. The goal is not to limit anything, but to define well what we want in order act accordingly. The questions is asked in order to get feedbacks and a consensus.

As in adressing the topic now

MisterSpeed's picture

As in adressing the topic now before it becomes a greater issue ? That actually makes more sense than a push in one particular direction.

REPLY TO As in adressing the topic now

It is not an issue. I do not catch your comment.
One of the ideas behind this is to ask what advantages there shoud be, if need there is, to be member, and evaluate any advantage people can get form the community, including sponsorship, persistant exposure on the website and during the events, and if somebody should pay for this in order to benefit the whole community.
