I am working with a company who is considering opening an office in the Greater Salt Lake City Area.
The immediate need would be for back end drupal developers who could help support existing drupal websites, build custom modules, and launch mobile applications.
Does anyone have recommendations for developers or development firms in the area? They want to get a sense for the depth of the local talent pool. Type of work would require PHP system architecture and development experience and developing/designing open source applications (Drupal, WordPress, Elgg, Ruby on Rails, MySQL, etc.)
Open to specific individuals or developments firms with local presence.

I can't compare to other
I can't compare to other places outside of Salt Lake, but there's a major need for Drupal talent in the Salt Lake area. I know there are a handful of firms that are doing Drupal development work regularly, but it's tough to find great developers - there are several of them, but most of them are in great positions that it would be tough to lure them out of.
As much as it pains me to say this, there might be a bit more luck in the Provo area as it's my understanding that BYU uses Drupal heavily and so there's a lot of talent/knowledge coming out of there. That being said, I rarely see those people.
In terms of web developers in general, I think we're about on par with anywhere - great talent and at the same time lots of opportunities. The market is competitive for good developers - I believe that's the case all over the US right now.
If you're able, come to the Drupal Camp at the end of the month - that would be a great opportunity to see what's available and talk to people in the community.

I will be out there 2 weeks before drupal camp utah and hoping to meet with people or development firms in the area.
Any idea of how to effectively reach the BYU community? byu job board for example?

I'm not sure - maybe someone else here will know or perhaps one of them will see your message.
From BYU
There are a lot of departments at BYU using Drupal but not a lot of custom module development. My experience thus far with the Utah Drupal community has been that there are more Drupal Developers in the SLC area than in Provo. If that isn't the case, I would hope some of them would pipe up here. I can speak for the BYU community that there aren't many Drupal Developers on campus.
