So I've been out of the loop for a few months, and now there's this job posting functionality available. I've been poking around, but can't seem to find anything more on guidelines other than what is presented when creating the posting. What I'm interested in knowing is if there are any guidelines on how long a posting is valid for. I've seen several for short-term positions that are months old for jobs that must be long done by now. Are the job postings just going to hang around forever?

Excellent point!
On craigslist.org, free postings (I don't know about the paid ones) for tangible items (computers, etc.) normally expire after 45 days. I'm not sure what happens to craigslist.org job posts, but they probably disappear in a similar manner.
I vote that job postings here on g.d.o be given a date upon which they expire and then they're no longer visible. I think the job poster should be able to choose a time frame for his/her job post, say a week, a month, or, at most, 2 months. I also think the job poster should be able to delete his/her job post once the job has been filled (if before the expiration period) or is no longer available.
Just my $0.02. :)

maybe
the current approach just has older postings scroll to to the end of whatever list you are viewing (a global list, group specific, ...). i am not opposed to other approaches, but i don't see much benefit either. i do see benefit in getting the word out so there are more jobs and stuff scrolls down faster.
I suppose for groups with
I suppose for groups with lots of activity, that would probably work fine, but for groups that don't have a lot of activity, it doesn't work so well. For example, until today the Las Vegas group has only had four posts this year, and all of them are job postings. It just doesn't look all that great.
Deleting job posts
I've already filled my post on Drupal.org and it's showing up in search results. Please let me know how I can delete this post...
delete a job post ???
Please let me know how I can delete a job post. Thnx!
Currently, you can either
Currently, you can either talk with a manager of the group in question (shown as a "group organizer" in the sidebar on group pages) or post a request at http://drupal.org/project/issues/groupsdrupalorg
prefer not to delete, but update
My preference is that people not delete the job, but simply update it to say the position has been filled and remove your contact information from the post.
It's great from a historical perspective to see what kinds of jobs have been posted over the years.
If there is something you absolutely must remove (name of company, something posted by accident) then just remove that section of the post as well.

I completely disagree
Greggles,
I know this is an old post but I couldn't disagree with you any more. As a contractor ... i.e..... someone who sometimes looks for extra freelance work, I'm only interested in jobs that are current and available. I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in looking at jobs I CAN'T GET. If you try to search anything beyond Telecommute or FT/PT.... then you're going to get a bunch of stuff that does nothing besides waste our time as a job seekers. This ends up hurting this site long term. Why do you think CL drops ads after a certain period of time? It's because an ad for something that's not available is useless to the end user. I think your point of view on this could be detrimental to this site long term in that old posting will outnumber new, if they don't already.

Jeffrey
Why do you think CL drops ads
Could be for a lot of reasons. Do you have a citation?
That said, you may be interested in Improve job content type and view and Enable "mark my own job as closed" where there is discussion to add the kind of feature you're looking for.
