Tournament System

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'm in the process of finishing up a CS degree like many others. One thing that I have always done while working on class work, or even since I first was introduced to a computer was gaming, or competing. This is anything from pool, bowling, boxing, and the good old fashion clan/team battle in a rpg(role playing game) or fps(first person shooter) game. It is fun and one of the most time consuming elements is being able to record wins / losses and all the little things that people get fired up about. I have used several CMS's ever since CMS's started coming out and Drupal being one of them has shown a lot of forward thinking and progress and is an obvious fit.

So I hope I can work on this project.

Some features I would include would be more options inside groups to modify standard name sets to sound the way the website owner likes. Another feature is something I like to call a "challenge board" other users can formally challenge another group with different privacy settings. Statistics board with everything from personal stats to team stats. Any current tournaments people are participating in with the bracket style standings. Integration with any pre-existing calendars. User team registrations will also be something to work on. I also would like to work on another module that would work with current games(NWN, MW2) to automatically syndicate player match statistics, or at the very least make an API available for developers for the creation of server side syndication tools.

I have worked on this idea a little and I have some rough mock ups already done. This is an idea I have had for awhile I would like to adapt to Drupal.

You can look here - http://www.kinggoddard.com/vampportal/ (project no longer active) and of course my site is http://www.kinggoddard.com/ where I have coded everything myself.

Timeline:
I believe coding this wouldn't take more than 3 months. I already have most of the planning done.

So I think this is a pretty cool project, especially having been involved in a variety of formalized competitive endeavors over the years. You could definitely spend three or more months doing this. Are you talking about just doing a simple ladder, or incorporating some other types of competitions (double-elimination, round-robin, fantasy-type, etc.) Do you envision building a module or more of a packaged installation profile? It sounds like the latter to me. You will want to flesh this out with a lot more detail of exactly what your deliverables will be and how it fits into a timeline.

I think with some fleshing out this could be a fun and interesting project. It might be a little aggressive for three months but maybe not either.

Hi, something new
