Better Structure for this group ... some ideas

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Well, just kind of looking at this group it seems as it is more used for just support request. Wouldn't there be a better place for this stuff, like an issue tracker or something, so we can keep this space for discussion about new features.

Well, there are some important features, I think are missing:
- Timebased publishing combined with workflows. There are some good modules, but none cover all the needs (I can get into this more in detail)
- The whole navigation problem setting the active menu item (which doesn't work right now)
- content locking
- Dashboard for editors, from where they can do their daily tasks and have an overview of what is going on on the site (comments, content...) and would be awesome if it was customizable

Well, what I'm thinking about is a better installer where the user can decide which modules/features he wants to have enabled, so let's say I'm running a german speaking page, I don't want opencalais -> as it's not supported so I can actually already while installing not install the whole opencalais ... and there are some more features like this.

Well looking forward to some feedback on this.

Active menus with Context is

  1. Active menus with Context is a nightmare :( I can't get a straight answer about it from anybody.
  2. Have a look at http://drupal.org/project/revisioning . You can use Actions, Triggers, or Rules to accomplish anything you might want to do with workflow.
  3. What do you mean by content locking. Once again, with a little bit of creative craftiness Rules can do anything you need.
  4. Total control with Views will accomplish your dashboard. http://drupal.org/project/total_control Also, learn to use views and Views Bulk Processing to accomplish this types of stuff.

Active menus is always a hard

  1. Active menus is always a hard thing. I'm actually having some conecpt in mind that would solve that problem for a given usecase.

  2. Looks good. I know we can get it all done with these modules, but it's not as easy. For example: You can setup a workflow using the workflow module, works perfectly fine, but you could create a node, but it's not going to be published until 2 days later. Well, which date are you going to show? Created or updated date? None work. Well, then you have to be able to set a publish and unpublish date at the same time (for example for content advertisment that is limited to a time). Workflow, Rules and CCK can solve this problem, but it seems to be such a basic problem, way not solve it once and for all and get it into openpublish, especially since every publisher has the need for such a feature

  3. Something like this http://drupal.org/project/content_lock seems to be a must have for publishers

  4. Total control looks good, once again, yes you can do it with views, but it's daily business for publishers which means it's going to have to be somewhat more (I talked to those people ;)

with my post I didn't want to ask questions, but rather suggestions for getting openpublish to the next stage.

@rapsli, thanks a lot for

@rapsli,

thanks a lot for your feedback. Some great points there.

P.S. You are absolutely right about long-running discussions getting entangled with one-off support questions in this group. Unfortunately, groups are not that smart (or I don't know how to properly use them) so - still struggling how to solve this problem.

Thanks

The whole OpenCalais thing is

rapsli's picture

The whole OpenCalais thing is actually going to be my first thing to do. I'll though probably go the way of making a new profile, and just using some lightweight features and some feature modifications. We'll have to see how to combine these profiles, because I don't think two seperate projects are good. What do you think?

About the Group/Issue Queue. How about just refereing them to the issue queue?

Hi There I was looking a

Hi There
I was looking a little bit into the OpenPublish. I really like some things, but at other points it just goes to far. We are actually looking at a "kickstarter" for setting up our projects (mainly for the whole media industry). In most cases we are not going to need a lot of the features provided by OP.
There is though some base stuff, that is always the same: certain conten types, certain structures, the whole backend, workflows, user/content administration and a lot more. So, I'm thinking about starting an OpenPublish light version, which should not be a complete project, but a starter kit for media sites.

This would have the following pros:
- Being able to use a lot of the documentation. I would like to use the same theme (which is though not possible at the moment)
- General improvements would go into the project

Cons
- Well, it needs to be maintained, which is though not that hard, as there are only going to be basic modules included

You'll hear from me again
Raphael
