Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

More tweaks today.

  • The groups overview page now has a Language field and exposed filter. Just trying to highlight how global we are.
  • The My groups block now list the number of new posts in each group.

Feedback welcome.

New my groups is great

boris mann's picture

I'm loving the new "my groups". Might even be good to have some quick links there -- mark as read, unsub, etc.

Mark as read being the killer feature....

MAR link

moshe weitzman's picture

re 'mark as read' - you would use that if you already read about the new nodes via email or RSS. which begs the question, why bother marking stuff as read when you generally read off-site.

are you thinking a link for each group or a link for all groups. or both? anyone else want to chime in on the utility of this?

I'd like that, too

I read the site online only but sometimes there's posts that just don't look interesting. I'd like to be able to say mark everything in a group as read or mark everything in all groups read. I use the "my unread" tracker and it's nice to have it empty when there's nothing new that I haven't already decided I'm not going to read.

+1 on Boris' and Michelle's comments

As Michelle mentioned, I, too, read g.d.o online and like to keep "My unread" tracker (under "Recent") nice and tidy by not having a bunch of unread posts. And sometimes those posts take on a life of their own where people keep posting to them and I really have no interest in the posts, yet I'll retain membership if the group is interesting overall. Thus, I would like to MAR them (the posts I'm not interested in) without having actually read them.

I'm currently subscribed to about a dozen groups yet opted to get email for only one group - the Austin group - since I manage it and we have monthly events. And the email I receive concerning the Austin group I generally don't read via Gmail but instead delete them since they're really only used as a "heads up" that I need to check groups.drupal.org. The reason I don't read them via Gmail is because in the back of my head, I know that there is an "unread" post here on g.d.o, so why should I waste my time reading emails when I still have to "get rid" of "unread" posts? I would read the posts to my Austin group via email if I knew I could later in the day easily MAR them here on g.d.o.

Any new posts to the other eleven or so groups I belong to here on g.d.o I simply read via "My unread" tracker. It would drive me nuts to be constantly receiving email to all my groups.

The bottom line is that we all use these various tools in different ways and the more options you provide, the better it generally is for your users. I'm all for MAR functionality in terms of a checkbox or a radio button next to each comment listed in "My unread". Even after I've MAR'd a new comment and it's disappeared from "My unread", it would need to reappear with the checkbox or radio button anytime folks submitted a new reply so that I could again MAR it. Thanks for looking into this.

mark all as read status

moshe weitzman's picture

IMO, the best way to do mark all as read was proposed centuries ago by Kjartan. See http://drupal.org/node/1762 for the issue. I could hack in a solution for us here but really I prefer if someone updates his patch and submits to core.

Re: MAR links

I second Boris' comment about the cool new functional look of the My Groups block. Nice goin!

I think that an M.A.R. link is a good idea to have for each group in the list. I'd use it a lot, cause some of my subscribed groups get read via RSS, and some are a combination, and some, like this one, are on-site only.

I definitely wouldn't add an 'unsubscribe' link for each group on that list, since it'd be too easy to mistakenly click it. Not to mention that if you want to remove yourself from a group, it's only one additional step away.

RSS doesn't work

boris mann's picture

For whatever reason, reading this site via RSS just doesn't work for me. Well, one reason being that I want to be "in" a ton of groups, but there are only a couple of posts that are important.

So, MAR :P

My Groups Block: HOW?

dnosker's picture

I would like to add a "My Groups" block and the "Group Categories" block to my site. How was this done? Is this a module or?

Thanks.

block details

moshe weitzman's picture

the my groups block here is a customized verison of the og_my View. i added the 'Og: Group: Post Count New' field (requires 5.x.4 version). the groups categories block comes form og_vocab module.

there is an 'about this site' page linked form the footer on this site. a bit of info is there.

you done a very nice job

waytoca's picture

it is a great job, I really like this website, and I would like know, which module you use for this site, and how to add create a group function and must be approved by administrator.

see footer

moshe weitzman's picture

there is a link in the footer which answers this question.

thanks for your reply moshe

waytoca's picture

I have read the about page, I still have one question, there is two type approve,
1. when I create a goup in web site, I need approve by webmaster
2. when a user want to subscripe a goup, need the group administrator approve

I can not find how to set the first one, when I create a contect type of group, I can not find setting for this

...which you can then try and piece together.

Hey dnosker,

I was looking for the same thing and so I did a search based on Moshe's helpful reply to you. On my Google toolbar, I entered "site:drupal.org og_my" and it returned a few helpful links.

Check this one out, and go to the steps under #7. I added some info under #10. Where did the "my groups" block go? I hope it helps.

Your Groups Block: How?

ccdoss's picture

I would like to have something along the lines of, "This user belongs to these groups" on a user's profile page. So, when I visit www.mysite.com/profiles/user/7, I see user 7's groups in a block. Similar to facebook. Obviously, if I use the My Block, it'd show my groups. I tried cloning the view and modifying (not good with views), but there doesn't seem to be a way to modify so it shows this. Is this possible?

SQL

michelle's picture

There's SQL for this in the Author Pane module. You can grab that.
