Portland Event Idea: Drupal Mini-Camp

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
wolv3rin3's picture

Consider this the kick off for discussion of the following. Everything written below is open for conversation/discussion.

What
A one-day, multi-session, free to everyone drupal-camp. Hosted and 'taught' by members of the portland drupal group.

Who
Two groups to focus on:
1) Introduce more of the general pdx dev community to drupal - particularly the what makes it good and examples of successful implementation.
2) Current drupal users/developers who want more training/education.

When
Saturday in later half of May Saturday May 10th, 2008

Opportunities
Sponsorship: At least to get a place and lunch...and maybe funds for promo.
Ad/Promo: This shouldn't be too hard (well, assuming the above happens), but I think being strategic is important.

Sessions
The idea would be for individual members (or pairs) of the pdx drupal group to suggest and run a session. It's far too easy to come up with ideas, tracks, etc. before we have the people. More quality and less quantity would be my suggestion.

There's a wiki page with session suggestions and sessions people have expressed interest in presenting.

--
That's all I got. So, who's interested?

Seems to have stalled

po8's picture

I'd be psyched to see this happen if folks are up for it. I can probably help a bit with sponsorship.

Sounds great and lets thow in some dates

myjeep's picture

Ok Drupal community members please email me some dates (Saturdays) and what area of town you like to see this? (NW, NE, SW, SE).
I will compile all the responses and prepare a suggestion.

If we can't get a sponsor for space, how many of you are interested in renting a public event room like BridgePort which has a decent size meeting room and has WIFI, Cubespace, etc?

KerryF's picture

It looks like we can have the Drupal mini Camp on Saturday May 17th, this seems to be the most popular day at The Portland State Business Accelerator. I hope to get the date hammered out at our next meeting.

Thanks

Dates + Gameplan

wolv3rin3's picture

I vote Saturday, either May 10 or 17.

(I'm out of town on the 31. And the 24 is Memorial Day Weekend = a lot of people on the go and unavailable I would guess.)

--

Andrew has mentioned interest in Promo+Sponsors. And, yes, space will be critical of course. (Earlier on someone mentioned PSU?)

Here are the general categories of planning that could use people assigned to them.

1) Seminars/Tracks
2) Location (find + manage)
3) Promo (attendees + sponsors)
4) Registration (?)

Anything else?

So far the following people may fit the spots:

1) David Price
2) ?
3) Andrew (yes, I'm volunteering you unless you say otherwise)
4) ?

--

I'm going to start another topic regarding people who are interested in presenting.

Dates and Game Plan

myjeep's picture

I can do #2 Location (find + manage):

The only response I got from someone was interested was in SW. I also want to know if we can't find a sponsor,
will to give us $$$ for a place will anyone pay $$ to rent a public meeting room.???

I can also do Registration ()

I'd like to see the location

eliza411's picture

I'd like to see the location somewhere easily reachable by transit and reasonably central to downtown, but having it be affordable and where it will be convenient for the desired attendees seems most important. Unfortunately, being relatively new to Portland, I don't really know where that is.

i'm in

drewish's picture

Yeah, sign me up for a slot. Not sure what I'll be doing at this point, hopefully views 6 will be stable. I'd love to do something with that.

Location

KerryF's picture

NeutralSpace can handle the location and will sponsor the event if people decide that our location is a good fit. I posted several posts about that on this page.

Thanks

Session: Views and Arguments

eliza411's picture

I'd be interested in presenting a session on views arguments and argument handling code with practical examples in drupal 5.7

Version?

eljustino's picture

Is the idea to have most of the discussion centered around Drupal 6 and promoting use/development on that platform? Does it matter?

re: version?

wolv3rin3's picture

By May I imagine we'll mostly be talking about Drupal 6 if we're talking versions at all.

But, no, I don't think that's what matters or will impact much (i.e. promoting drupal 6 specifically). Hopefully people will suggest strategy and point of all this as we go along.

I'm still suggesting two foci for now: 1) general introduction to drupal 2) how to dev with drupal.

(yes, I just wrote foci...and, yes, I'm laughing about it...)

Version is a great

eliza411's picture

Version is a great question.

I'm reluctant to commit to a drupal 6 presentation when views for drupal 6 are still in alpha, so if covering views and arguments in 5.7 wouldn't be useful, I'd certainly be willing to attend sessions instead :)

Mailing List + Twitter + Whatever

wolv3rin3's picture

Anyone want to set up a mailing list for people interested but not subscribed to group.drupal? Already had a couple people 'from the outside' who are interested in attending ask for this...

Drupal Mini-Camp

KerryF's picture

I work for a start up called NeutralSpace and we are located inside of the PSU Business Accelerator. There are multiple conference rooms and 1 large room typically available. My CEO is out of town, but might want to talk because we are using Drupal to develop a new version of Citysearch.

NeutralSpace Space

myjeep's picture

Please talk to your CEO and see if we can use the conference room. Do you know what is the capacity of the room? Any WIFI connection?

Mini Camp Location

KerryF's picture

I will talk to my CEO, but I will be leaving out of town tomorrow for the rest of the week. There is a wifi connection and the room should hold at least 50 people. When I get back in town I can figure out the details. We might be able to sponsor the event to or pay for the room if there is a fee. If will be easier and more cost effective if we can hold the event during the work week.

I'd also prefer an event

bonobo's picture

I'd also prefer an event that took place during the work week --

Maybe we could get a poll up that gets at what people would prefer --

Cheers,

Bill

Agreed, though for the opposite reason. I'd never get time off work so I'd prefer weekends.

Sala kahle,

Yeah, that's the quandary --

bonobo's picture

Yeah, that's the quandary -- it's actually easier for me to carve time out during the work day, and on weekends I try and spend as much time as possible making sure that my family can still recognize me :)

That's why I think a poll might be the way to go -- get some hard numbers.

Although I suspect I'm probably in the minority here...

Cheers,

Bill

A poll

drewish's picture

I created a poll to get some feedback on this: http://groups.drupal.org/node/9373 Since we picked May 10th as our date I've deleted the poll.

Neutral Space can provide the location

KerryF's picture

I talked to my Ceo and we will pick up the tab to hose the event at the PSU Business Accelerator.

Amenities include:
Wifi
1 main meeting room that can hold between 40-100 people depending on layout
2 conference rooms for breakout sessions if we need them.

Projector
Parking
We might need to have someone bring speakers and a microphone
Around a 5 minute walk from the Trolley at Riverplace or OHSU in the south waterfront

THE ONLY DOWNFALL is we would need to do this during the week. I have tentatively scheduled Friday May 2nd as the times fill up. I would like us to come up with a date by next week.

I can handle the Marketing and would like to MC the Event

I figure we could start in the late afternoon and run the event into the evening. I figure this would be fine for the majority of the people

Here are the available dates for May

May 1-2
May 12-15
Friday 19-22

I will be out of town later today and getting back this weekend. So I probably will not be able to respond to any comments.

Since we a relationship with PSU we could involve the University

Keynote speakers could be Matt Westgate from Lullabot or Bart Massey

My boss would like to speak as well, maybe on Business and Drupal

I would like to see an intro to drupal class for people that do not know about it. I think someone mentioned this idea.

dates and weekdays

drm's picture

I can do weekdays as easily as weekends, but will be out of the country at the beginning of May.

The best option

ZaphMann's picture

Truth is any day of the week will present a problem for some, so it should be decided by best offer of facilities.

I like the idea of "an intro to drupal class for people that do not know about it. I think someone mentioned this idea." as all the proposed sessions entail very technical aspects.

There's also a whole forgotten category of interest - people like myself who built a site (about 4 months work) and then want to focus on content. Personally I'm being told by some other technicians that all php based cms are 'old hat'. I also don't want to be trapped into time constantly eaten up by version upgrades. I'd like a session discussing such things for users who's focus is the content not the vehicle.

PS anyone who wants to look at what I did (5.1) it's morethanoil.com, basically designed to be a public information site built on taxonomy & a functional model.

Best to all

Mini Camp Location

KerryF's picture

I have provided dates that I am able to schedule a meeting space for the mini-camp. I just need people's feedback on the dates. The dates that I suggested in an earlier post are available. I was hoping we could work one of those days out as soon as possible as the meeting space fills up quickly. I have May 2nd tentatively scheduled for now. We could do the event around lunch time or starting in the later afternoon until the early evening. I would also like to have the layout be like a typical mini-camp where you have a keynote speaker, networking and break out sessions you can choose from.

Thanks

Kerry

Looking forward to it

drm's picture

Looking forward to attending this - either May 10 or 17 would work for me. I think I'm too new to Drupal to be a presenter, but if there is some way for somebody who has been using and developing Drupal for a hafl year to help out, let me know.

Dean

This conference sounds like

danmuzyka's picture

This conference sounds like a great idea!

Like Dean, I'm not sure I have enough knowledge or experience to lead any sessions, but I'd be happy to help with grunt work. Unfortunately I don't have any connections that might lead to a venue or sponsorship, but I could help with administrative details such as registration.

I'm assuming we can discuss this at the March Drupal meeting? I plan to be there.

anyone can present

drewish's picture

I'm not sure I have enough knowledge or experience to lead any sessions

the one thing i'd say to everyone is: you know more than you think. ask yourself what presentation would you have liked to sit through six months ago. we're going to have a wide range of people attending and odds are very good that you know more about at least one subject than a good chunk of people there. for instance, i'd say that i'm pretty confident doing module development but i've wasted a good chunk of the last trying to get a site themed and i'd love to have someone outline some best practices for theming more complicated sites.

the idea is to share what you do know, so don't underestimate that. if we end up doing 90 minute blocks you could easily team up with someone (as it looks like people are doing). having two people works really well because one person can type and the other can provide running banter when things don't work right ;)

i'm sure we'll be talking about it at the next meeting.

Yes, you have some good

danmuzyka's picture

Yes, you have some good points. I would certainly be happy to team up with someone to lead a session. With two or three people leading each session we will be less likely to miss a point or to explain it in a way that doesn't make sense to the audience.

Drupal for Community Building - Advocacy, organizing

yopyop's picture

I'd love there to be a session on community building for grassroots advocacy using drupal. I know there is a session proposed of using Drupal for political campaigns, but it's the best practices in the more 2-way aspect of using drupal for community groups (groups, integration with discussion list serves, integration with mass emailers or other newsletter functions, civicrm, models for e-democracy) that I'm very interested in. Also usability for non-techies, the best practices.

I can prepare a session for showing what I've done with http://www.pdxpeace.org, as a accidental-developer, if people think it's appropriate, or I'd be happy to talk with Jenny S on her political campaign topic to see if there is anything I can bring to that.

Anyway, I'm psyched for this.

Community...

jsimonis's picture

I'd love to help out with a community building session as well.

My idea for the political one would get into CiviCRM, organic groups, etc. But community building is definitely a different issue.

I also use Drupal for community sites and have been working to get all the neighborhood associations here in Gresham onto a free Drupal multi-site setup that I created. It's at an easy-to-remember address (unlike the city's web site) and we can put up content easily that doesn't have to be approved by the city. Currently, city pages are just contact info, minutes, bylaws, etc. and they put up events. We're planning to use it for community building.

Maybe a few of us who do these kinds of sites can help lead a session on it? That way there could be people who have expertise in different areas of this, particularly when you get into list serves and mass mailers.

I've been trying to encourage as many political groups, campaigns, community groups, etc. to use Drupal and (if needed) CiviCRM. I think having sessions that show such groups the benefits, how easy it is to use, etc. would really help get more people here using it.

In my opinion sessions with

grantkruger's picture

In my opinion sessions with multiple speakers (and a moderator) are always better than sessions led by just a single presenter. You get multiple perspectives and a more interesting talk, where the outspoken balance the quiet, and the informative feed off each other.

Sala kahle,
Grant

I'd be interesting in adding

kuhrin's picture

I'd be interesting in adding to a workshop on how organizations can use Drupal. What's the best way for me to plug in?

Is May the only option?

myjeep's picture

I was wondering if the month of May is the only option. No one wants to do something sooner then May??

No, I saw that a few people

KerryF's picture

No, I saw that a few people wanted to have it in May so I looked into May dates. The first half of June would provide us more time for planning and promotions. I am also trying to see if we can have the event on a Saturday at our location which is inside of the PSBA at PSU.

Very interested in helping

jbrauer's picture

I'm very interested in helping in whatever way possible.... Drupal + Portland rocks and hopefully I'll manage to bring some other Boise folk along.

As for dates Early in May works (and most likely something sooner). The first couple weeks of June are out for me as I'm off to do a Drupal track at CALIcon for the law school technology types and will be putting the wraps on a couple of projects the first weeks of June.

MiniCamp Topic: SEO for Drupal sites

gonz's picture

We never really got a chance to lay down what our topics were going to be for the MiniCamp at tonights meeting - is there a formal way to suggest topics and possibly volunteer for that topic (or find a team who would want to present on that same topic)?

If this is the place - then I would like to suggest and volunteer for the topic of SEO in Drupal. Would anybody like to join me?

I might also want to join a team of people who would like to present about theming or jQuery. Anybody else on this page?

Yes, I would be interested

danmuzyka's picture

Yes, I would be interested in co-presenting on theming. I'd like to get involved, and I have more background in design, information architecture, and usability than in development.

That said, I'm also interested in co-leading a session about information architecture features of Drupal. Despite some of the major usability problems with the admin interface that Grant described at tonight's meeting (which are also being discussed quite a lot in the Usability Group), I think Drupal has the potential for excellent usability for the end-user given the powerful taxonomy-related contributed modules. Just an idea, but maybe the information architecture topic could tie in to some degree with SEO if there aren't enough people to lead separate sessions on the two topics. At a high level IA and SEO relate to findability.

Oh, if there's interest in breaking down the logistical responsibility into several smaller areas (e.g. one person doing the A/V and another managing registration), I would be happy to help with some of it. I don't think I have time to take on all logistical responsibilities, however.

WIKI signup?

gonz's picture

I know we talked about creating an honor system WIKI for registration of the event - maybe Drewish or RockIp or somebody else could set up a WIKI for presentation suggestions - and MiniCamp task responsibilities (hint hint).

I just get kind of lost on all these scrolling group dialogs.

good idea

drewish's picture

i've created a wiki page for presentations here: http://groups.drupal.org/node/9748

i think as far as responsibilities, i'd like to see that done at a DrupalCamp organizational meeting rather than on a wiki page. i'll pester dave to post a org meeting event, people who'd like to volunteer can throw in a comment.

(what is this?) Case Study: Non-Developer

jclay's picture

Could someone pls explain this item that's already on the wiki => Case Study: Non-Developer - as an example, the great presentation Brian gave last night (Level 1)
I didn't see the presentation, and maybe the item I'm thinking of is the same as this one. thanks

That's referring to the

drewish's picture

That's referring to the Skyline Ridge community site that was demoed at the Feb meeting. It was an excellent example of what you could build with Drupal by creative module use and zero coding.

I'm Presenting!

matt westgate's picture

Thanks for organizing this peeps. I just added the presentations I'd love to chat about to the wiki. What else do we need in terms of resources? I bet drewish and I can throw a conference site and reg system together. Lullabot can lay down some funds for refreshments, strobe lights, stickers, PA system, water, etc.

Awesome. We're lucky to

grantkruger's picture

Awesome. We're lucky to have you hereabouts. You might want to join us at the organising comittee, from the sound of things, or at least speak to the guy in charge of sponsorships. I do know that your setting up a conference site and reg system would be a big plus.

Multi-Registration Forms

miagd's picture

Great to meet you all last night. I'm happy to help out with the Drupal PDX Boot Camp however I can and will see you at the Lucky Dog on Wednesday.

Request: Working on a client site that has 4 user roles. The User_AutoRole Module has been perfect because it generates an auto sign up url for each role. Here is the sample (follow the links and notice the registration urls you end up at). Perfect! The problem is that it uses the same registration form for ALL generated urls. Can anyone point me to a "user friendly" module that creates multiple registration forms. OR, is someone willing to help me (for hire) "modify" the User_AutoRole Module so when I create a new "Roleset", I can also choose which registration form to use?

Only local images are allowed.

Thanks for any feedback!

Hey, this is Robin from

robeano's picture

Hey, this is Robin from Seattle. Our DUG (SEADUG) is planning a DrupalCamp for the end of June. And did you know that Vancouver, BC DUG is also planning a DrupalCamp in May? If we can coordinate a bit, I think that would be great. A little time between each camp, would allow folks to attend all three or maybe fewer or at least offer options for folks. What do you think?

Our DUG meets next week and we'll be working out more details about our DrupalCamp then. I'll be sure to mention you're planning one too. Rockin!
