Hi all,
I've been wrestling with this for a while now, and read various conversations about why the Facebook-style Micropublisher module was designed the way it was, without using CCK and non-node based. But looking at the way Drupal is going and the modular approach it is taking, especially with fields being core in D7, I think that this type of functionality would be superb to be able to achieve using the various CCK modules.
Basically, it'd be using the link field, alongside the imagefield and a field for the title and metadata (description) - these would be auto-populated based on (I'm guessing?) an AJAX call to the given URL. The images would use imagecache to resize, on Facebook, the user can choose from any number of images for the attachment that best represents the link in question, limited only by the number images on the given URL. The title of the page is also populated at the same time, as well as a brief description of the links' content - either by the first few lines of text on the page or maybe the "description" meta.
I'm no programmer, but would be willing to help in any way I could to get this off the ground. If anyone else feels the same please lend your thoughts to this thread so we can get the ball moving!
Apologies, this is my first post in this group, hope it's the right place! :)
Many thanks,
Jonathan

Just went looking for this
Just went looking for this today and found this: http://drupal.org/project/imagefetchr
It's brand new so I haven't tried it but it sounds right based on the description.

This looks like it'll do the trick for images! Nice one. Don't think there's much to try yet though, that page only got written today! :)
Hopefully we'll see more soon, fingers crossed it's been built with CCK at the forefront. Be interesting if we could get the metadata fetch sorted too.
Let me know if you get this
Let me know if you get this working with CCK. I might be interested in building a CCK module.
Web Links module
If you really insist on a CCK based solution, I would recommend you see the Web Links module and if possible write an add-on for it which does the functionality you require.
Cheers,
I'm scoping this out for my Organization
Hey folks, I've been searching around for this functionality for a little bit. It's useless for us not to have cck/fields-based solution. The originating request was VERY similar to what my organization needs.
I'm following up on the computed field option, but if anyone gets a solution together I'm very interested.
Good news,
Good news, http://drupal.org/project/imagefetchr is almost ready for release and will do exactly as it says on the tin...
The module is using CCK and filefield to store images associated with nodes and the client-side javascript is designed to search all the node form fields for any URLS to retrieve images from.
This module only retrieves the images from found URLs and not the title or description as the Facebook Share feature does. I'd argue that would be better served as another module to extend functionality of Link fields anyway.
Big thanks to elimuir for the update and information, and of course for your hard work and efforts.
Image Fetchr released
The module has been publicly released. Your use and feedback is greatly appreciated.

Micropublisher field and form element
I developed the same functionality for a client. What I created is a custom form element and field to publish links. It uses oEmbed to embed videos, images and other rich media. This can be done by extending link module too. But you will need to have custom Ajax to extract and load URL contents.

I am watching the progress of this module
I would like many or all features of facebook in a proprietary application module for drupal. The privacy issues associated with facebook are a real issue for many people, since they have changed facebook.
The facebook has now become an information harvester and repository, which many now consider a major violation of privacy. It is not sensible to divulge personal information so easily, and have it harvested by outsiders and in some instances by un-friendly interests.
There is so little privacy already. It is unacceptable when you realize how the Facebookers of today will regret all they have divulged. Their thoughts and sharing intimate details about themselves can and will be used by others in all manner of ways in the future.
I am working on site that would be very attractive with Facebook features. I envision making allowances for members not to be compelled to use real names, real addresses and other information that can be used to damage them.
I look forward to having open discussions and sharing without people having to divulge direct personal information that can be used by others for advantage.
