Gallery module incorporating Imagefield and Taxonomy

I have found imagefield and taxonomy very useful for creating photo nodes and organizing them into categories. Even with Views module's help, the ability to create effective image galleries with this methodology is difficult. I envision a module that would provide features like those of Gallery 2. For example, each category should have a "highlighted" node which would provide the thumbnail for that category. Image sizes for thumbnails, full-size, etc. could easily be generated using imagecache integration. Perhaps some jQuery could also be incorporated to provide a more flashy face to the galleries.

With the rise in use of imagefield, imagecache and CCK, along with the difficulty to achieve this with Views, I think that this would help out lots of people who want the functionality of something like Gallery 2, but don't want to have to maintain a whole separate installation (e.g. using the Drupal gallery 2 module).

Ok, not to burst your bubble but...

I think this is SUPER extraneous. Views already does all of this work right now today, and all it requires is a bit of education on args and theming. I think what you really want (if anything) is for args to be easier to define from within views (which we're switching to views2 and it's still alpha so this is probably the wrong time to address such a thing) or the other option would be to build some specific views output types (full nodes, teasers, lists, etc) that would style output like a gallery. We don't need another option for gallery type work. We have too many already, and this all goes back to the "what are we going to do with images going forward" debate, of which we don't need yet another contender.

Sorry, I have to really discourage this one.

I have to agree

There are quite fundamental discussions about CCK in core which may touch on image handling at a much lower level - imagefield might be a completely different beast in D7.

There's also already a bunch of modules which add some kind of gallery functionality to CCK and/or views, and like EclipseGC says, taxonomy arguments take a little bit of working out - but making those easier should be the priority (and I think it's already a little easier in Views 2 than it was in 1 - so it ought to be a lot easier in D6 to set stuff like this up as well.

Agreed w/ above...

Yeah, the problem with this proposal is it is treading on ground that's already been tread by a few dozen contributed modules. Based on community feedback to this idea, I'm going to have to mark this proposal rejected.

Something that might be interesting though is creating an installation profile that effectively transforms Drupal into a Gallery2 clone? I'm not sure if that could be a SoC project or not, or even if it's possible to do that currently.
