We are interested in utilizing Drupal as a platform for building applications for use in laboratory science. These applications are typically either built from the ground up, or licensed as expensive vertical market software. We believe that with Drupal, we can change that situation and make it less expensive for laboratories to introduce automation to their procedures.
Our current project, in its early stages, is to develop a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) in Drupal that can be used in both professional and education-oriented laboratories. We are conceptualizing this system as being built entirely, or mostly, from contributed and core modules, but it may eventually incorporate some custom modules and/or evolve into a distribution profile.
We established this group in order to create a place for us, and others who may be interested in building a LIMS or other science applications with Drupal, to discuss approaches and compare notes. If you are interested in this use for Drupal, please join us!
Note: This is not a general or jobs-oriented group, but we invite job posts as long as they are directly related to science (and, of course, Drupal). Please post non-science related jobs in other locations. Thank you!
Drupal development - staging - Production - deployment strategies
Dear all,
I thought it would be very helpful if I would bring it up here.
Our situation is that we are moving a large, multi-user knowledge management Portal into private beta. While we wish to have a "live" version of the site, with content creation, file upload , image upload and addition etc, we wish to maintain active development on several aspects of functionality.

As this group has grown - 38 members last time I looked! - I thought it might be time to find out what everyone is up to. How are you using - or planning to use - Drupal in science? If you're running part of your lab with Drupal, how does it fit in with the rest of your systems? Are you using it to collaborate with other labs or institutions?
Read moreTwo excellent modules for drupal based LIMS systems
In the last couple of weeks I've written two more drupal based LIMS systems. To create custom views for these systems I originally used tweaked tpl.php files but in the end I used the "Views Custom Field" module which solved many of my problems I had with the tpl.php files. This module is great to use data which is nested deep into the hierarchy (formed by the node hierarchy module).
Read moreAn example of a Drupal LIMS system
Hi all, since this is my first post in this new group I wanted to start a discussion based on an example site I already made.
I work for a company named INTRON BV (The Netherlands) at which I'm a business developer. In my spare time when I'm not inventing new solutions for construction related problems I'm developing some internal drupal sites.
Attached are some screenshots of an internal dutch Drupal LIMS system with which laboratory samples are managed. The system is called DIF and it functions as follows:

The foremost question while thinking Drupal as LIMS is: What does the LIMS do?
Once we identify the requirements, we can identify modules, themes and custom modules/scripts as well.
I would like to know the LIMS as well as implementing it.
Regards.

The attached jpeg is a sketch outlining the ideas Rudy and I have discussed regarding a LIMS built with Drupal. Rudy sketched this up and has given me permission to post it for the group. It reflects our specific requirements, but is probably a good starting point for anyone developing a LIMS. Please share your thoughts with the group and feel free to post your own sketches or more fully developed wireframes.

This page will start with the list of modules currently being tested as the core of the LIMS system. Please add your ideas, name any modules you've tried, and what functions are tied in to which modules.

CCK (project, samples, activities are all custom content types)
Automatic node title

Custom php snippets to auto create children (samples with barcodes) with some custom fields
Examples of ELNs

To use as some points of reference, this lists some of the available Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) that are currently available, either as free and/or open source or as commercial packages.
Open Source ELNs
- MyLabBook - Open source ELN based on Drupal.
- MyTea Lab Notebook - Open source project from England to use lab notebooks with Grid computing. Seems to not have had much development since ca 2006.
