We are interested in utilizing Drupal as a platform for building applications for use in laboratory science. These applications are typically either built from the ground up, or licensed as expensive vertical market software. We believe that with Drupal, we can change that situation and make it less expensive for laboratories to introduce automation to their procedures.
Our current project, in its early stages, is to develop a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) in Drupal that can be used in both professional and education-oriented laboratories. We are conceptualizing this system as being built entirely, or mostly, from contributed and core modules, but it may eventually incorporate some custom modules and/or evolve into a distribution profile.
We established this group in order to create a place for us, and others who may be interested in building a LIMS or other science applications with Drupal, to discuss approaches and compare notes. If you are interested in this use for Drupal, please join us!
Note: This is not a general or jobs-oriented group, but we invite job posts as long as they are directly related to science (and, of course, Drupal). Please post non-science related jobs in other locations. Thank you!
Webinar: Relaunching GlobalChange.gov
Hi fellow Science on Drupalists,
We are pleased to announce the next ESIP Drupal Working Group webinar for September 24th at 2pm CT.
Presenting is the team from ForumOne (http://forumone.com/) on:
Relaunching GlobalChange.gov
Called by Philip Bump of The Atlantic “one of the best designed, clearest articulations of climate change I've ever seen.”, get the inside story on the design and launch of GlobalChange.gov, the highest-profile Obama administration website of 2014. Built to present a unified compendium of federal climate change research drawn from 13 different agencies, the site also houses the Third National Climate Assessment – the definitive report on how climate change is affecting the United States. Join us to learn from the strategy and development teams that worked with the U.S. Global Change Research Program and their stakeholders for over a year to design, develop, and launch this Drupal 7 site to wide public acclaim.

Hey folks,
In case you are interested, I wanted to pass along a link to the Drupal Association Board which talks about what it is and why you should considering running for a seat. I think this is something our group should consider, and I'm interested to hear what you think about it.

Hello fellow ESIP Drupalists,
Wow does time fly! It seems like it was just a few weeks ago we were all having dinner in Frisco, CO. Our next telecon is scheduled for Wednesday, August 27th at 2pm CDT where we will be discussing the Strategy, Planning, and Vision of Science on Drupal.
What the heck is that?! Well, this is time for all of us to give feedback about the ESIP Drupal WG, in preparation for next year's budget. So, what worked? What stunk? What direction would you like to see the group go in for 2015?
For instance, at this year's Drupal Summer Lab, we split it into two half days. Did that work for your schedule or do you prefer one day?
We also had the opportunity to send two people to Drupalcon this year. Is that something you would like us to continue (next year is Drupalcon LA - Hollywood).
What's the best way for us to collaborate and share ideas and questions outside of scheduled group activities. ESIP Drupal mailing list, drupal.org group, Google+, Stack Exchange?
Please come join us as we talk through these topics and any others you want to bring up! EVERYONE is welcome as you are the most important voice to making sure the ESIP Drupal WG is successful and meets your needs. Telecon details below.

Presented by Inigo San Gil (LTER Network Office), Jason Tallant (University of Michigan Biological Station), and Dave Reid (Lullabot)
DESCRIPTION
The Drupal Ecological Information Management System (DEIMS) is a Drupal-based grass-roots efforts to create a common open-source, collaborative platform to manage ecological data and information. With DEIMS, we manage all-things scientific information: from data, metadata, catalogs, directories, and produce XML services using common metadata standards, such as ISO, EML and BDP. The original DEIMS started in 2008, based in Drupal 6, with UMBS, a handful of LTER sites, and Oak Ridge National Lab. In March 2013, the Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER) started working with palantir.net to solidify the early work on DEIMS. This collaboration resulted in a professional profile with a sustainable development platform. DEIMS offers better and more metadata and data services using an adaptive/responsive interface. In this Webex, we will give you an overview of the DEIMS, and cover in some detail the DEIMS Data Explorer feature, which allows Drupal to connect to scientific databases and providing a visual query editor on the data resources described in detail in DEIMS. As an added bonus, you will hear from Dave Reid, who is the main contributor to DEIMS as well as perhaps the most prolific Drupal developer and core maintainer.

The Next ESIP Drupal Telecon is Wednesday NOV 27, 11am PST
Please join the ESIP Drupal Working Group in welcoming Phase2 presenting a webinar on what is NEW and GREAT about Open Atrium 2:
Uncovering Open Atrium 2
As one of the most popular, open source collaboration platforms powered by Drupal, Open Atrium 2 has powerful capabilities for managing communications, knowledge, and teams. Open Atrium’s flexible framework is built to scale, allowing for a small departmental intranet or multi-site portal and it can change as an organization grows.

Angie Byron (webchick), who will be talking about Drupal 8 and then getting into discussions in the afternoon unconference.
Owen Barton (Drush maintainer) is also speaking on updates to Drush.
We invite all local Drupalistas to join in! The Friday Center at UNC charges us $70 per day per person... so we have to pass along a one day fee ($70) to people who are not registered for the main ESIP meeting.

Hi all - I just found this group and figured I'd mention the project I'm working on, Sensor Hub. I'm hoping that by Beta2 this will be something that even non-scientists/Drupalists can use to collect sensor data from the environment around them. Beta2 will use Open Atrium (speifically OG Spaces) to give each Sensor Board their own group and the ability to turn on and off components specific to that sensor board. After I get Beta2 (almost done https://github.com/rjstatic/sensor-hub/tree/6.x-1.0) out I'll also be writing a Views integration for the Node Highcharts server (https://github.com/rjstatic/node-highcharts) I wrote for graphing LARGE amounts of data.

I've recently been investigating the possibility of using Drupal for a simple LIMS for our lab. I've looked at the various open-source LIMS options, and everything seems like overkill for our purposes. All I need is simple job tracking as a sample moves between various stages of prep/analysis/QA/QC, and I thought Drupal might fit the bill nicely.
Currently, we rely on paper forms for tracking samples. Technicians fill out a "COC" (Chain of Custody), add samples to it, and the whole COC is moved about the lab.

At the moment I'm not using the json server, but just the "standard" xml-rpc module which works perfectly for me.
