Best practices for building local community sites
The purpose of this thread is to discuss best practices for building local community sites.
I am building a local community site in D7. This is my first community site, so I started this thread to see if anyone has advice for a local community site newbie.
I know that this advice may vary depending on the type of community, but hopefully there are some common threads between all local community sites.
I did not make this thread too specific on purpose so this can be an open discussion related to building local community sites with Drupal 7.
Thanks,
Hector
What is a local community site?
First, it doesn't look like too many people have been using the community group so perhaps we don't even need a subgroup, at least, for the time being.
Can we distinguish between a 'social networking site' and a 'local community site'? A community site shouldn't necessarily be for just social networking. Drupal doesn't have the edge on Ning, Facebook, and MeetUp.

Business directory theory....
One of the many genres of website is the business directory. This seemed to become very popular during the early and mid 2000's with most following the pattern of having many listings with paid listings that gravitated to the top of lists with more information on them.
There are a few problems with this approach. First, there are many out-of-the-box solutions and Joomla has a handful of plug and play modules. Also, when looking for a business why not just go ahead and use Google?

Drupal Modules is a community-powered Drupal module review system I've been working on for about a year now. I'm happy to announce the site is finally open to the public!
Here's a brief list of what you can do on the site:
- Rate and review any module
- Compare modules to see which has the best features, documentation, etc
- Check how many downloads a module is getting
- Easily search modules and reviews for keywords
- Get automatic recommendations for similar modules
- And more!
