Need advice/guidance in building a digital library

Hello, I started building a digital library in Drupal for a digital library class. So far I've run into what seems like unending stumbling blocks. I'm using a Dublin Core module that relies on XC to create my metadata fields. However, now I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to create an individual gallery display with thumbnail navigation.

Has anyone here ever created a digital library in Drupal? Do you have any tips, what modules you used, etc.?

Thanks!

A Few Useful Modules

There is a sea of modules for Drupal. The selection can be daunting. I am going to list a few modules that I have discovered while solving real issues on a new intranet that I created for our library. Many of these I learned about from various Lullabot resources.

Making a Node Secure/Limited to one user Role?

Hi Everyone, I hate to use this listserv for trouble-shooting, but we're all librarians here, so I hope you'll understand.

I'm trying to accomplish creating a node that will only be visible by our library board for board packets. The actual meeting minutes, etc are all public information and those get placed front-and-center, but the agendas and packets we would like under lock and key and only have them accessible to the board.

Acquisitions processing

Does anyone have any insight into how we might convert our access database which resides on one staff members computer - containing orders; processes reports etc for acquisitions in our public library system?

Filtering Vendor Databases by Branch

Hi folks,

I've run into a problem that I hope someone can help with. My library district has a lot of vendor database subscriptions, but a handful of these databases are only available at certain branches or just inhouse.

Currently we use a vbscript file that defines the branch IP range for each branch. If the vendor database is tagged with that branch in a home-grown SQL database access is limited to that branch.

Automated Readers Advisory - Taxonomy or Node Reference

I was wondering if anyone had any experience building something for automating readers advisory. My librarians are calling it "read-a-likes." The idea is that there is a list of authors. Each author would link to their page with links to other similar authors. You can see the example below.

If you like David Baldacci, then try:

William Bernhardt
Stephen J. Cannell
Linda Fairstein
Vince Flynn
James Grippando
John Grisham
Brad Meltzer
Kyle Mills
Robert Tanenbaum
Stuart Woods (Will Lee Series)

A further example can be found here.

Basic Libraries Distros

Since implementing Drupal on our library website, I've spoken to a number of library Drupal programmers and seen many implementations of Drupal for library websites. Many of the implementations do the same things as one another but in different ways, which can cause module clashes and frustration for new Drupal users trying to maintain newly-transformed library websites. While all of these sites have needs unique to them, they also all have some basic needs in common that are unique to library sites.
