mockup: developer.drupal.org

If we decide to go with the concept of 'landing pages' for each target audience, here's an idea of what the developer.drupal.org portal might look like. You'll notice that it's missing stuff like "latest project releases", but that's because those are going to go in something like download.drupal.org. ;)

Possible IA redesign mockup

Attached is potential information architecture redesign based along functional/user persona lines. This needs work, however it's one method of organizing content.

Whether or not these are actual different sites or not remains to be seen... there are pros (could install specific tools for each site -- ex diff module on the docs site, project module on the dev site) and cons (link rot o-plenty, lack of cohesive search) to both.

Only local images are allowed.

Analysis of other websites: Home pages

Here's a PDF that contains annotated screenshots of the home pages of joomla.org, dev.alfresco.com, and plone.org, including things that I found kind of interesting, or stuff that we maybe should try and borrow from (up for debate).

Feel free to post your own analyses here as well, of these or other sites.

My hope is that from this we can generate wireframes of what the main page of Drupal.org should contain.

Drupal.org personas

The goal of these personas is to create a profile for all the various "types" of users that drupal.org must cater to, so that we can structure our information and add features appropriately.

These came about from brainstorming between Jeff Eaton and several others on IRC. I've made this a wiki so anyone can add/edit stuff on here. A lot of the holes can likely be filled by copy/pasting bits from http://groups.drupal.org/node/3679 and the "Question 4. What would you describe as your goals for visiting Drupal.org ?" results.

Improve module categorization

It is a known fact that the drupal modules page (http://drupal.org/project/Modules) is not perfect. There's a lot of discussion going on about how to gather module quality metrics, whether to enable a voting module or not, etc.
It's quite true that it's currently rather difficult to find what you're looking for. I think that by now I've got quite a good overview about the "hot" modules, but still for me, I often find the modules by using the advanced search or by checking cvs commit track page of the user of which I know he created the module.

3) Session length
4) Frequency of visits

I'd like to discuss what data we need and what questions we hope to answer before approach the infrastructure team for the raw data to ask questions.

Drupal.org user experience interview #1

I conducted this interview in #drupal-support on Saturday night at SuperHappy Dev house. The interview focused on identifying the user, and their usage of Drupal.org. We then discussed overall goals of the user, and individual tasks they conducted on the web site. Finally, we focused on qualifying the tasks on Drupal.org by ease of use, and difficultly. We finally finish with the identification of important task we might have overlooked in our structured questions.

We need more volunteers to conduct up to 10 interviews to prepare the survey.

Re-design beginning

The D.O. re-design is beginning.

There are two general tasks quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis.

I'll ask the infrastructure list for the quantitative data.
1) Web Access logs to determine most popular pages, and to determine inbound and outbound linking.
2) Search tables for analyzing searches

Drupal's Designer Future

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to write in and link to Steven's excellent post titled "Drupal's Designer Future" in case you didn't see it:

http://acko.net/blog/drupals-designer-future

Let's work together to make Drupal better for designers! There is a lot that can be done that will make our lives easier and benefit the entire Drupal community. It's not an easy task, but let's figure out a game plan and priorities to get some enhancements done now so they can be included in the next release.

Your thoughts?
