Cardsort Exercise for Drupal Modules

if you've been following along you'd be aware that one of the nuts we're currently trying to crack is the modules section of the d.o website - how can we make modules more findable.

in the interest of gathering more information to help make a good decision, i've put together another little cardsorting exercise.
if you have a spare 15mins or so, I'd love if you could take a look at it!

you can find it here: http://disambiguity.optimalsort.com/drupalmodules/

if you have any comments/questions/feedback to the contents of the cardsort or the process, feel free to post them here.

Help answer some quick questions?

hi there

as we go through this redesign process we occasionally come across stuff we're not 100% clear on.
I thought, if it's ok with you, that we'd add any questions we had here and if you have a moment to help answer them, you could?
(hoping this is fairly rapid response without being too noisy)

sound ok?

ok. here's the first question I've got for you.

I'm looking at the Drupal Project Download page (http://drupal.org/project/Drupal+project) although it could be any download page I think. One of the columns in the table says 'date'.

Making Modules Findable

cross post with: http://www.disambiguity.com/drupalorg-redesign-making-modules-findable/

One thing I’ve learned on this project so far is that if you’ve been using Drupal for more than about ten minutes, chances are you’ve had a look for a module or two.

Research participants are rarely unanimous but I think I can safely say that every single Drupal user I have spoken to has told me how difficult it is to firstly find and then evaluate the usefulness of modules.

So. That’s one thing we’d really like to help to fix in this redesign.

Drupal.org re-design prototype iteration 8

Hi,

Iteration 8 is now available for you to browse and comment on. Last week the redesign took a pretty drastic change in direction so this week's release isn't as massive as we have worked to consolidate changes to the IA, reacting to feedback from the testing and to trends we have established in the community feedback.

Last week Leisa posted her thoughts on why we have moved in this direction and you can read her thoughts here:

http://www.disambiguity.com/drupalorg-redesign-iteration-7-for-your-review

Leisa will also be posting again shortly to further discuss our thoughts and reasons for recent changes as well as talking specifically about the modules section.

The link to the latest iteration is below:

Prototype Iteration 7

Hi,

We received some fantastic feedback on iteration 6 last week, but we have a few more iterations to go, so your thoughts and comments are more important to the process now than ever before.

You will notice with iteration 7 that we have made some quite drastic changes over the last week ... changes that we feel better serve existing Drupal users AND people new to Drupal. Leisa will be posting shortly (here it is) with our thinking on some of these proposed changes.

La internationalisation

Internationalization is at the same time needed and hard to achieve.
I may be a little late in this redesign discussion, but I think it's important to bring some light to this issue.

What About Drupal?

So, we've had the 'About' section in the prototype for a while now, and we're turning our attention to the content. We're seeing this section as a place for evaluators of Drupal to make a decision. But also, as this is software, there are things like technical requirements that need to be included.

So we need your opinion and feedback.

What do you think needs to go in this section?
Are we on the right lines with the current prototype?
What do you think the navigation items should be?

Prototype Iteration 6

Hi,

Following on from last week's call for feedback on iteration 5 of the prototype ... we have now progressed to iteration 6, whereby we have begun to integrate the visual design into the prototype, making the prototype feel more like a website now and less like wireframes.

We encourage you to browse through the prototype and feedback your thoughts and ideas in this thread. The link to the latest iteration is below (please note the slight change in URL - this is because of a new version of Blueprint, and additions to CSS etc.):

Updated Redesign Schedule

As I mentioned in my recap blog post, the redesign is few weeks off the original schedule, but all-in all not to much.

Here's an update of what's to come:
November 7-9 - community feedback on prototype iteration 7 and design iteration 3
November 14-16 - community feedback on prototype iteration 8 (final review) and design iteration 4
November 21-23 - community feedback on design iteration 5 (final review)

After that last round of feedback, MBD will work on refining and finalizing the copy, design and brand style guide for final delivery on December 5.

req. sort by date option for drupal search.

hello, i was re-directed from the main drupal site in order to ask this question;

I would like to respectfully make a suggestion about searching in drupal.org site. would it be possible to add a "sort by date added" option. oftentimes when I see the result of search. The dates of the post are mixed up. I am trying to get the most recent answer to a topic because how often things change. thanks. or if there is a way to do that and I have overlooked it, could someone please point it out to me? thanks again.

Rethinking documentation

The redesign has been doing lots of great stuff, rethinking how we approach Drupal.org. We should take this opportunity to really think about how we present documentation on the site. There has been a lot of talk and there are lots of little nits of annoyance in addition to the larger complaint of organization with regard to the handbooks. I wanted to try to gather up at least some of the larger things for us to consider and continue the discussion so that we can focus on specific changes while we have the services of MBD available to us.

Crowdsourcing Usability Testing

x-post with http://www.disambiguity.com/drupalorg-crowdsourcing-usability-testing-ge...

Another day, another way to be involved in the Drupal.org redesign project, and this one’s a little different - but I think it’s going to be great fun!

Here’s what we’re going to do.

I’m going to be doing some remote usability testing using screen sharing and screen recording software that I’ll share back with all of you and that will help guide the ongoing design of the prototype. In particular, I’m going to be doing research with ‘outsiders’.

Changing the drupal.org mission statement

Bert brings up an interesting issue in this post: http://willy.boerland.com/myblog/googles_birthday_and_drupal.

This is the 2001 mission statement:

To develop a leading edge open-source content management system that implements the latest thinking in community publishing, knowledge management, and software design. We value flexibility, simplicity, and utility in our product; teamwork, innovation, and openness in our community; and modularity, extensibility and maintainability in our code.

Forum topics with open, resolved and unsolved statuses?

Hey drupalers,

I would like to propose a new feature for the redesign of the d.o forum.
Wouldn't it be nice if the author of a forum topic can give the topic a resolved or closed status?
This way it's easier to see what topics need more help.
A proposal for some topic statuses:
- open
- closed (resolved)
- closed (unsolved) -> when a topic is open and has not been replied within a month for example or if the author sets it t manually to unsolved.

Maybe you know experts-exchange.com? This is a commercial forum that also works with open and closed questions.

Searching for Modules and Themes with certain characteristics

Drupal has many (thousands of) modules and themes that make it an attractive platfrom to use. But often researching modules and themes takes longer than to build them into a solution. Here are a few suggestions for how the new d.o could help people find modules and themes more quickly:

  • A list of modules by category, where you get a page with all the modules in that category (not like the current category list with a pager). Please retain the current listing of all modules - a text search in the browse through this page is often the best way to find things.

Redesign Schedule: Top Level IA feedback

Hi All,

Today is the second in our scheduled dates to ask you for your feedback (if you haven't done so already). This week the focus is on the top level information architecture.

  • Top Level IA:

Leisa continues her incredible work trying to understand the community's needs and desires for the IA and how to incorporate this for 'insiders' and 'outsiders'.

As with previous weeks; Leisa is still openly blogging about her research, but we still need and welcome your feedback. The relevant research for the IA can be found at the following:
