The cpu we are using is an intel Xeon quad core (though we are only using 2 cores in our VM). It is an E5345 processor with 8MB of L2 cache, a clock speed of 2.33GHz and FSB speed of 1333MHz.
For a fresh install of Drupal: we see a load on a single core of about 9-10% for about 1 – 1.5 seconds from both IE and Firefox clients

Need someone to shed light on tuning a Mercury install
Performance Group: please don't kill me for this post. I've been learning a lot about Drupal as of late. I'm an ex-Windows server admin, so jumping into LAMP and Drupal has been a little overwhelming.
I've got Mercury running on a Linode with 1GB of RAM right now. Need advice on where to go to read up on what to do next. My site is done and I know that Apache, MySQL, Varnish, Pressflow....all of that stuff needs tuning. My site will be 100% authenticated users.
Not afraid to read the docs, just need help in locating the magic place the good ones are kept.

i decided to go with drupal 7 instead of pressflow, but i am not at all clear what are the steps to make drupal 7 perform faster. is there some kind of instructions listed anywhere? I know about the boost module, for example. I have heard of stuff like squid and varnish, but do i use that will drupal 7?

I have a separate server for Mysql. I am noticing that the amount of used memory shown by Top is gradually increasing.
I don't have anything else on the server (no php) except for basic OS (fedora 13)
Some tables are myisam and some are innoDB. Used drupal 6.x so started originally with myisam and converted a few to innodb as required.
I know mysql is memory hog. But is this normal? Is there a way to tail MYSQL to have a limit?
Quite popular site so is this a result of number of connecttion? But then shouldn't it release the memory as time goes?

Tweaking the file system (files/*)
I recently (yesterday) got my hands dirty with a huge news-site in Greece that suffers from really bad performance!
I checked the filesystem and saw that the previous admins placed all files under the "sites/default/files" folder, without creating subdirectories. Now there are more than 20000 files under there, increasing by 100 per day.
Could this be the source of all evil? The owners of the site say that the problems are getting worse every month so I imagined that by re-arranging files in the file-system I would gain something in performance.

I am going to create a D6-based web site for a huge number of users ( > 800,000). We expect this site to have tens of thousands of nodes (>20,000).
What is the impact on performance of these? I could not find any info on scaling the user accounts number. Does it make absolutely no problem performance-wise to have so many user accounts?
Here is what i managed to gather until now:
- i should use the SOLR module for my search engine, because the vanilla Drupal search engine will not scale to that nodes number,
