The next High Performance Drupal meetup is on Tuesday, June 18, 2013, between 7-9pm Pacific (10-12pm Eastern). We're meeting at Filter Digital, a digital solutions agency in Culver City. Those interested in attending this meetup remotely are welcome to join us via WebEx.

Our meetups follow a basic format and start off with Drupal news and announcements, local job announcements, raffle prizes and full-length presentations. As always, we'll also have community Q&A, during which time anyone in attendance can ask questions, divine answers from the crowd and give brief, 5-10 minute-long presentations known as lightning talks. We'll finish off the night with more networking and a Drupal After Dark at 9:00pm.

Drupal not registering public ip after installing Varnish

Hi there,

I am going crazy about the fact that Drupal 7 does not register the public ip's from my users after installing Varnish.

I have these variables n my settings.php:

$conf['reverse_proxy'] = TRUE;

$conf['cache'] = 1;
$conf['cache_lifetime'] = 0;
$conf['page_cache_maximum_age'] = 21600;
$conf['reverse_proxy_header'] = 'HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR';
$conf['reverse_proxy_addresses'] = array('127.0.0.1');

$conf['omit_vary_cookie'] = TRUE;

Everywhere I look people say that this is enough, however with my site it still registers everyone is coming from 127.0.0.1

Random APC findings

I was playing with APC object cache and was wondering if the key length affected the object size stored in APC. I Google and didn't find anything.

So I did some testing myself and it seems that the size of 656b per object is consistent when both key less that ~400 character and value is also less than ~400 character.

So doing some optimization/shorting of the key is not necessary if you have a key shorter than ~400 character.

Phalcon, the fastest php framework delivered as a c extension should replace symfony in d9?

newrelic & page_manager_node_view

we're using pressflow-6.28 on redhat6.4 w/ php5.3.3, there are two web heads residing behind varnish-3.0.4, web heads doesn't seem like experiencing heavy loads (0.2 15 min).

according to newrelic's dashboard /page_manager_node_view is:

most time consuming (97.1%)
slowest average response time (2050ms)
apdex most dissatisfying (95.6%)
highest throughput (14.4rpm)

PHP Variable Hunter & Enhancement Proposals.

I was honored to present my ideas at the HP meeting last night. Learned a bunch! As a followup I've just added PHP Variable Hunter (PVH) to Sandbox @ https://drupal.org/sandbox/jeoware/2023153. It can be downloaded from https://github.com/jeoware/PHP_Variable_Hunter/ and can be used in any PHP program by changing the extension.

Now, as to feedback, I'm asking for any and all comments, particularly challenges and suggestions of the sequence I should progress. Here's the ideas I presented last night. They are detailed at http://www.idxsoft.com/enhancements.

Huge Node Revisions table - what can i do ?

The node_revisions table in my D6 database is too huge (2.6gb). I don't use node revisions and have turn off node revision per content type. This has resulted to shouting my website down because the database is over its allocated size. Below is the email I just received. I tried deleting old notes using the below query but 0 record deleted

DELETE FROM {node_revisions} nr WHERE nr.vid NOT IN (SELECT n.vid FROM (node) n)');

PHP's OPcache and Drupal

The recently released PHP 5.5 introduces a built-in opcode cache solution called, well, OPcache. The same system is also available for some earlier versions of PHP via PECL. The fact that it is shipped with and developed alongside the PHP core means that there shouldn't be any problems in the future with the PHP core introducing functionality that the opcode cache can't handle, as can be the case with third-party systems.
