Aegir 0.4 alpha 3 released

The Aegir project is proud to announce the third alpha of our 0.4 release cycle. The focus of this release has been exclusively on bug fixes and improving the user interface through the application of sensible javascript and AHAH elements. We have also significantly improved the installation process and now provide documentation for CentOS and Debian.
Backup From Command Line, Restore in Aegir?
Hi All,
I'd like to run a nightly site backup. I can achieve this on the command line with a command like
/usr/bin/drush -y --root='/var/www/aegir/path-to-drupal' 'provision' 'backup' 'example.com'
However, the backup doesn't show up in the Aegir admin for this site (not surprisingly I guess given that I did the backup from the command line).
The question is then - how can I achieve this? Backup on the command line or otherwise nightly and be able to restore from the Aegir admin. Is there a way to schedule backups in Aegir?

I'm writing about the current status of using Aegir to manage Drupal installs across multiple servers/VPSes.
I've followed the documentation to install Aegir 0.4 on one VPS (http://groups.drupal.org/node/25495), and confirmed that I could setup a new site on that VPS. That was a very easy process, so thanks to everyone who is supporting this system.

Aegir install on OSX Snow Leopard
Aegir install instructions are fantastic if you run Debian/Ubuntu Linux. Some of the steps for OS X are a quite different. These instructions assume you are installing on Snow Leopard Client; if you are running on Snow Leopard Server many of these steps will not apply to you.
Read moreHas anyone tried using Aegir with Cygwin?
I know that Aegir states that Windows is not supported. However, has anyone has tried using it via Cygwin on a WAMP server? I suppose it would be much more likely to work if everything was in a Cygwin environment (i.e. Apache, PHP, and MySQL all running in Cygwin), but my setup uses native Windows installs of these.
Thought I'd ask before giving it a try....

I would like to find a solution with a relatively easy-to-use user interface that provisions dev/test/live environments. The Aegir project is a close fit

Read moreAegir / Network Manager integration?
While @ Drupalcamp Montreal I gave a talk on the Network Manager and how it's helping us manage our sites (see screencasts for usage). Right afterwards I (finally) was able to watch someone walk through everything that Aegir provides. I realize that Aegir is more hosting company in a box focused and my project is for things much smaller in scope (some overlap but totally different context of usage). I was wondering though if there might be a way of tying some of the functionality of the network manager into Aegir.
Read moreInstalling Aegir on CentOS - more detail
I've attached some more detailed instructions on how to install Aegir on CentOS.
The instructions may not be 100% perfect, but I'm due to install Aegir on CentOS again next week, which should given me an opportunity to fine-tune the instructions further.
I've had no trouble setting up a multi-webserver setup as well. If you're trying it yourself and get stuck, ping me on IRC (resonancedev in #aegir) or post a comment.

Hi
I tried to install aegir on ubuntu via the shell script. (On an ubuntu 9.04 VMWare image)
First question: in the wiki they mention to "su - aegir" to run the script instead of "sudo". But how can you do it when the aegir user isn't created yet (this is done in the script).
So i did sudo sh install.sh. Everything went fine, I tried to install the domain "aegir.local". After the installation, I'm not able to reach aegir.local. (firefox says address not found) What do I need to do?
Thanks for your help...
Read moreaegir and php as fastcgi under Apache - some tips, some questions.
Running php as fastcgi has a reputation for using less server resources (specifically memory) that makes it attractive when memory starts to run low. Once the general setup of fastcgi is done enabling Drupal to run with it under Apache is as simple as adding 'ExecCGI' to the Options for a particular in either htaccess, the vhost file or elsewhere in the global Apache config.
When it comes to installing Aegir, simply adding ExecCGI to Aegir's default vhost during setup works fine.
Experience porting an existing site to Aegir
Hi all,
I just wanted to share my experience migrating an existing site to Aegir, in the hope that others will find it illuminating and it will help them avoid some of the pitfalls I encountered.
Read moreTattler - Install error out
Hey all,
I've been using Aegir since 4.0 alpha2 came out and have a couple issues with install profiles.
I first noticed came across this error when trying to create a quick install profile using http://www.lullabot.com/articles/5-step-drupal-distributions .
Now I get basically the same errors when using tattler http://tattlerapp.com/download . It verify's alright but bombs out on the install.
I tired renaming the tattler.profile file to tattler_install.profile (like suggested in the FAQ) and renamed the profile folder as well. (I also changed anything in the profile file that I though might have needed to be change) and it still does work.

So other than some time I spent on a cleaner user interface for tasks last night, I also sat down with mig5 and anarcat to figure out what our next few weeks of goals are going to be.
Now that we have moved towards using drush make, we can finally start using some external modules that provide useful functionality to the hosting front end, obviously with the goal still to keep them to a minimum, but if they are reliable we should be able to use them.

I ran the install script for aegir and seems to be working fine, however I can't get any mail sent from the site. I have ubuntu which comes with exim4 installed, but not sure what configuration needs to be made. I won't be using this server for hosting email, just for emails sent out from the sites, as I have a gmail app for my domain name emails.
Thanks in advance!

The Aegir team is happy to present the second alpha release of the 0.4 milestone. Like the first alpha, this is a "developer preview" release following the hugely popular 0.3 release, which includes many bug fixes to alpha1, along with a stack of exciting new features. While we are in alpha stage with 0.4, we recommend that production system continue to use the 0.3 stable release for now. However, many important bug fixes did make it into this alpha, so we encourage you to check it out however way you can.

SCM and development workflow with aegir/multisite environment
Hello,
I am looking for ideas to organize SCM and development workflow for distributed teams with aegir/multisite environment.
Here is some initial thought:
- Each developer will have multisite or even aegir environment if applicable;
- Staging/production server will have aegir;
- Every custom website will have it's own scm(we using git), for custom theme at least and custom modules at most;
Now developers have to checkout sites into their local environment and push it back when they done.
