Are technically oriented questions allowed on the group level or should they be brought up at drupal.org?
I haven't posted before so I don't know what the etiquette is, and I'd rather ask someone local (i.e. in the city group San Diego) rather than pester the world.

Yes and No is my experience
I had the same question when I first signed up. I looked at the "type" of groups that can be created (Geographical, Working Group, Distribution, Event Planning and Archive) and decided for myself that there is probably some technical posting going on in working group and distribution groups, not not too much so in the others. Probably best to post "issues" for the module in question at drupal.org.
Hope that helps!

Well, it's not "issues" with modules. They all seem to work well for me. Here's the problem I have and I need concepts, ideas, uses of modules, etc. as possible solutions.
I made a new content type called 'products' for obvious reasons. I want to added technical paper PDFs to the node. I already added a product photo and product data sheet via Images and Upload. Since there are potentially several files, I would like to sort them by subject, such as Instruction Manuals, Performance Data, and Specifications.
How would I do this?
Support Request
If you go to http://drupal.org/project/issues/drupal and select "create a new issue", you will find one fo the "Category" dropdown items is "Support Request", so "issue is widely defined at drupal.org

What version of Drupal are
What version of Drupal are you using?
Using Taxonomy is great in categorizing items (Views module allows you to do what you're proposing along with the use of Taxonomy).
Also, are these files/documents private? In Drupal 7 you can specify which files need to be Private or need to be Public. In Drupal 6 upon installation you have choose if ALL your files are private or public. A HUGE issue to consider, if you have a lot of data files.

If you want to slice/dice and sort your product content type nodes I would suggest setting up a taxonomy with terms like "Instruction Manuals," "Performance Data," "Specifications," etc and then use Views to display the desired lists of content.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm currently using Drupal 6.2x because I needed to move forward with the project and a key modules weren't available with 7. I am using Taxonomy to slice and dice the 'products' into groups such as applications, industries, etc. Same with the images. Most of the files will be public--but planning ahead, a few may need to be private for a separate role. Eventually, I want to move to Drupal 7.
So, I'll use taxonomy to sort the files and make views to include on 'product' nodes. Thank you all for your help. I'll muddle with it for a few days to see what I can get working. Sometimes talking to others just helps my brain work better.
Questions
Welcome to our group. While I think most technical questions tend to be posted by topic in the broader site, it's often easier to get quick responses here and we don't actually post that much so I like the idea of posting questions so we can pitch in and help our community grow. Look forward to meeting you at a meetup.
