I'm front -end developer new to Drupal but not new to other CMS's.
I'm trying to get proof of concept up and running like http://www.denveropenmedia.org/
I have drupal 6.22 up and running though it won't allow me install the MERCI & Open Media System modules.
That is that I need to get these and the other OMP modules up and running?

Can you give a bit more detail on "won't allow me to install the MERCI & Open Media System modules"? Drupal 6.22 should be fine, but you may be missing some other dependencies for MERCI or the OMP modules. For instance MERCI lists its requirements on the module page as:
Depends on: Content (enabled), Number (enabled), Date (enabled), Date API (enabled), Date Popup (enabled), Date Timezone (enabled), Views (enabled), Taxonomy (enabled), Fieldgroup (enabled), Option Widgets (enabled)
If one or more of those modules are not present, you won't be able to enable MERCI...

The best list of requirements
The best list of requirements is going to be on the http://www.yoursite.org/admin/build/modules page for your site. On the line for MERCI, or for any of the other modules it should list of its requirements.

Yes that is correct -- some
Yes that is correct -- some of those modules are a collection that will come with a single module download. For instance: Content, Number, Optionwidgets and Fieldgroup are all included with the Content Construction Kit (CCK) available here: http://drupal.org/project/cck.
Also, you do not necessarily need the missing modules in the "Required by" section -- those are just other modules that depend on MERCI being enabled.
Adding CCK(http://drupal.org/project/cck), Views(http://drupal.org/project/views), and the date module (http://drupal.org/project/date) should take care of most of the MERCI requirements..

Not really -- there is one
Not really -- there is one but it is seriously out of date so it is better to download the modules separately right now. I am trying to allocate some time to update it but that may not happen for months unless someone else gets to it first...
