List of Items Broken on OP Vanilla Install & Fixes

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I know I've done the "wrong" thing here but desperate times call for, well you know. I'm more or less a Drupal newbie, but I've been tossed into trying to get OP up and running for a small local paper. I could get other solutions running, but I really like OP and I know the client would as well so I want to exhaust my options before I throw in the towel on it. After getting it installed and getting all the API keys and that goodness set up I realized that with my vanilla install there were a lot of things broken. This was obviously pretty disheartening. Anyway, I wanted to throw a message up here in hopes I could get pointed to the right threads as search wasn't hitting what I need (as far as I could tell, like I said I'm a Drupal newb).

I installed OP 2.3 Build 441.

Got things going fine, aside from the bold warnings on security updates/etc. So, question #1:
I know someone said it was safe to upgrade up the Drupal Core, but who about all the other modules including Devel as it claims to be security upgrade as well? Are these generally safe, or is it best practice to leave them the hell alone as long as they work? With so many modules I'm scared to touch things because I feel like dependencies could snowball into a huge problem. I know about http://groups.drupal.org/node/60313, but the latest version listed is 2.2 so I'm not sure how that list applied to 2.3 - is it the same?

Security concerns aside - I then tried to add some content with a blog post, and that didn't go well at all. It appears that out of the box, 2 things are broken. One appears to be images in avatars/posts, they appear to be pointing to some imagecache directory/file that doesn't exist. The other is a Flikr API error warning at the top of my blog post, yielding warning: unlink(/tmp/1b1a8e2e9d5e2190d8138b972bd2aae4.cache) [function.unlink]: Operation not permitted in /home/MYWEBSITE/sites/all/modules/flickrapi/phpFlickr/phpFlickr.php on line 115. This is an error that shows up in non-published content, and isn't nearly as deal breaking as the broken images. Another feature I can't seem to get working is Apture. I enabled the module, key, etc. works on highlights but there's no button to add Apture links above the CKEditor window. From the sound of things it's supposed to just appear when Apture is enabled. So, question #2:
Is there already a thread or resource somewhere that covers all the elements that are broken with build 441 out of the box and ways to address/fix them? If not, if you can point me to some basic solutions I'm happy to start a thread that does this.

I'm not looking for massive customization on OP here, I basically would be happy to just have the basic product be fully functional out of the box. I know they are coming out with a D7 version soon, and if I could wait I would (I know D7 better than D6 anyway) but that's not my situation sadly.

Any/all help is appreciated, thanks all!

I think I won't be much help

I think I won't be much help as I am new to OP and Drupal but I can share some of my experiences. I am running version 2.3 and for what I'm doing it works fine. I'm running it on a shared host and have done no theme customizing.

Apture worked when I was running 2.2 and when I upgraded to 2.3 it would no longer work so I just removed it. I thought it was of little value anyway as it seemed to slow down page loads on both the front end and Admin end.

Flikr never worked for me in any version and I got a similar messages to yours. I don't like Flikr either as in my opinion it takes up valuable screen real estate and I don't have much control of what it puts on my site so I don't use it. The problem is when I turned off the modules I got all kinds of warning messages and when I removed them it broke my site completely. I now just deselect it when I create an article. It's a pain but I can live with it for now.

I don't use the Blog feature very heavily, but I don't have any of the problems you are having with it.

Some modules I've tried;

I had the ed_classified (http://drupal.org/project/ed_classified) module installed and when I upgraded to 2.3 it would no longer work. I tried to reinstall the module but it still didn't worked so I abandoned it.

I use Webform which works fine (http://drupal.org/project/webform)

I tried adding other Twitter modules but had problems so I stuck with Twitter Pull and it works fine.

I added Facebook Social (http://drupal.org/project/fb_social) which works great and has paid a lot of dividends in traffic.

I also have Fivestar (http://drupal.org/project/fivestar) which I've had no problems with it and it's a fun little add on I use in a small directory section.

I am looking forward to the version 7 release and hope it comes soon.

Every bit counts!

Thanks Gmal!

It's actually nice to have someone else to say - this didn't work for me either - so that I know it's not just a random weird problem that I'm having on just my install. I will play with the site this weekend and just try to remove or replace the modules giving me the most trouble. Thanks for the tips on new modules that DO work with the 2.3 install.

Did you have any trouble with broken images that you tried to upload? That's probably my biggest issue, and sadly I feel like it's some newb thing like having to mess with settings in imagecache or something, but there are so many modules running on this thing with overrides and strongarms I'm scared of burning down the forest by lighting up a tree.

I'm sorry you are having a

I'm sorry you are having a problem with Images. I've not had a problem with images at all, knock wood. I use them in the "Create Article" content type, both the main image and thumbnail upload, and just cut and paste smaller images right into the body of an article if needed using the CKEditor and never had any issues.

I've never messed with any of the settings in imagecache so I can't offer any insight there.

I also use them in the "Slideshow" content type and haven't had any problems there either.

The "Create Video" content type doesn't work that great for me but I just put the code (mostly Youtube) into the body manually and don't use the "Embedded Video" or "Video Thumbnail" option at the bottom of that content type. I'm sure that it has more to do with my lack of understanding of how this content type is supposed to work. But this approach works for me right now.

I also wanted to mention another module that helped tremendously, poormanscron (http://drupal.org/project/poormanscron). Works great and have had no issues with it.

Since we are a small operation these quirks don't really bother us. OP does everything we ask and we accept whatever little quirks it has. I think the biggest problem for us is there has never been detailed documentation of OP functionality. I would imagine that with version 7 planned there won't be any forthcoming.

A side note is it seems a bit of the energy has been waning in this group and that is sad . I've learned much about OP and Drupal here from a lot of the members and I want to say it always has been appreciated.

I wish you good luck and I'm sorry I can't offer "expert" help with your situation.
