I don't mind the telepathy, but it'll have to be organized, with a clear agenda and give a change for people who want to speak, get to speak. It forces people to clearly articulate their agenda and keep things short. Maybe not telephony, but some kind of web-based collab tool that lets people "step up to the mic", if that even exists. IRC is OK, but it gets muddy and hard to keep the separate conversations topical and on track.
type in a nickname (you don't have to register)
choose "IRC" as the Server Protocol
type irc.freenode.net into the Chat Server box
click "remember this connection" if you wish ;)
and click connect!
Now you have a little box with your connection info listed. Click on the "Join Room" button (or cmd + j)
type #drupal-design in the Chat Room box
click "Join"
Ta-da! Welcome to the D4D chat room! Easy peasy :)
i see the conf call scheduled for 6:30 EST tomorrow, but unfortunately this is very often a time at which i am commuting. if it's the time that works best for everyone else i will figure something out, but it may be wise to hold a vote on the time as well -- to try to make sure the majority of folks can attend.
I'm a new Mac user, so I've used a couple pc IRC clients. I ended up settling on Pidgin. It's a chat program that handles IRC, AIM, Jabber, and more. I thought it was easy to use and replaced all my other chat programs. http://pidgin.im/
Pidgin is available for PC, Mac, and Linux. There are also encryption plugins (OTR), a Facebook plugin, and Google chat/Jabber support, along with tabbed chat windows.
It's a good idea to register your nick (nickname/screen-name equivalent) with NickServ when you join irc.freenode.net. This will reserve your nick(s) for you and protect them with a password. Be sure not to lose your password, because I'm not sure if freenode supports an email-based password reset.
In Pidgin, I usually use the chat tab that NickServ uses. Once you're registered, Pidgin can save your nick and password info and automatically verify you with NickServ each time you log on to the server.

If you vote telepathy, we'll hold you to it.
We're happy to switch over to IRC, if the majority feels strongly. I can see that 100 folks on the phone would be pretty clumsy.
I'm an IRC virgin, so please go easy on me :-)

For Claudio and anyone else who is an IRC virgin...
Download Colloquy http://colloquy.info/downloads.html

Install as usual, start it up.
choose File -> New Connection ( or cmd+n)
type in a nickname (you don't have to register)
choose "IRC" as the Server Protocol
type irc.freenode.net into the Chat Server box

I will third it. In fact, I will have to let my boss know about it. I had not realized it was ported to Mac.

irc commands all start with the forward-slash. the server will intepret them no matter where you type them.
here's a pretty good list of irc commands you might want to use at some point:
