I wanted to get discussion going on how we can theme this website to make it a more useful home for connecting, organizing events, and discussing how we can help Drupal's global domination include Japan.
Groups on groups.drupal.org use the panels module and have a lot of flexibility. We can add multiple pages and blocks to organize content and help make the site more welcoming and easier to use.
Here are some examples of how other groups have organized their home to great effect:

I was just wondering how the drupal.org redesign will affect groups.drupal.org. I know the projects pages have received a lot of TLC in the past weeks on the code level, but I expect the visual/UI parts of the redesign to start popping up sooner or later.
Just wondering if efforts put now would be diluted or even need to be reworked based on the coming changes.
Maybe we should just find what's worth reorganizing now and what should wait after the redesign since its actively in progress.
I'd be interested in helping anyways :)
I'll try to look a bit more around and come up with more constructive ideas.

グループのホームページの整理
Dug around a bit to see how the d.o upgrade will affect g.d.o.
The g.d.o backend (og, views, panels) will stay in place but be upgraded to Drupal 6. That'll open up some new features. There will be an upgrade path from panels2 -> panels3, so any changes we make to the group now should convert.
With that in mind I started to play around with the group settings & realized pages are really quick and easy to setup.
Just published a 1st effort. Basically:

のところ、デフォルトの日時だけじゃなく、ほかの項目でもソートできるんですね。

At first I thought I reached the wrong page.
Some feedback.
Can we change the title text color for blocks contained in rounded-edge squares(maybe put some graphics next to the title to make it stand out), it took me a while to find the wiki section and I thought that might do it. 各セクションのタイトル部分の色変えられますか（グラフィックなど付けられたらさらに浮き出ると思います）？
ちょっとwiki見つけにくかったです。
really tiny request but at the events-attendees page, can we list the number(count) of attendees somewhere (maybe at the top next to title in brackets). Having such a cool page only to have to count makes no sense.
I think eventually the job tab should serve job listings for just Japanese and Japan area (in the future I am hoping that this tab would be getting quite a lot of usage representing Drupal popularity in Japan as a Japanese open source community).
One thing I do miss is that the previous version had more original graphics(avatar graphics) in it and was spaced out, whereas the new version seems very functional yet is somewhat like the other Japan Drupal organization sites. Can we somehow look towards looking like the http://www.drupal.org.uk/ by any chance, elegance is something I value very much as well as functionality. 機能性だけでなく、http://www.drupal.org.uk/ のようなエレガンスも追及していきませんか？他のDrupal日本サイトと一線を置く意味でも (kyokoさんにちょっと期待しています)

@Antoine : I increased the # of items in the latest topic list to 15 posts. I received several requests for a way to see which posts have recent comments (the "Recent activity" block is the only way to do that currently unfortunately), so i'd lean towards keeping that as it is. The "Latest discussion topics" services new or casual members, showing them what kind of things get discussed in the group and the "Recent Activity" block services active members who check the group regularly.
@everyone: New features: a Job tab for posting Drupal jobs and a Questions tab for asking Drupal questions :-)

I noticed when you move from the first page of 'Latest discussion topics' using pager, I get duplicate entries. You need to enable 'group multiple values' if you are using Views for this?

Threaded discussions
Is it possible, in any way, to turn off threaded discussions so that when someone replies to a topic, its reply just goes down the list instead of having inlined replies? (and when upgraded to drupal 6 maybe have recent replies up instead of down like mentioned in another comment). I think this becomes a big usability issue when the threads are long.
I could check it myself if I was given manager access, but I believe setvik's judgement on that issue.

Unfortunately, configurability is limited.
I can create panel pages and select from a set of predefined panes or create a custom html pane (no php obviously).
Content pane styles:
- teasers
- node titles
- table view
Options:
- nodes per page
- show a pager
- filter by nodetype and/or taxonomy term
- custom title
Pre-defined panes include:
- events
- jobs
- welcome
- group menu
- my groups
- members
- categories
- organizer resources
@dokumori: unfortunately i don't have access to the pane's underlying views and can't edit those in any way (they're universally shared across all groups on g.d.o)
@antoine: I like that idea a lot. unfortunately, same story here as well. group admins don't have access to change the comment style for group nodes as it would affect every group.
Let's start compiling a wish-list of g.d.o improvements we'd like to make though.
Since the upgrade is in-progress, this is the perfect time to throw our voices into the mix, make suggestions, and help out...
Any improvements we can suggest/make will benefit other g.d.o groups as well.
