Start:
2012-12-18 18:00 - 21:00 America/Los_Angeles
Event type:
User group meeting

Our Downtown Los Angeles Drupal meetup in December is on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 and once again we're combining it with our annual holiday party and food drive. Help us raise even more than we did last year when we raised $500 for the LA Food Bank! See http://groups.drupal.org/node/267768#food-drive for details.

This event is being hosted by Droplabs, your FREE coworking and hackerspace in Downtown Los Angeles. At this meetup, we're having our usual news and announcements, raffle prizes, lightning talks (which are short, bite-sized presentations) and featured presentations, and plenty of mingling and networking with your local community during our annual holiday party. See http://groups.drupal.org/node/267768#agenda for our agenda for the evening.

Holiday Party

Even if you can't make it to the meetup, you're welcome to join us after all the raffle prizes, job announcements and presentations for our annual holiday party. We'll be mingling and networking for most of the evening, and the party is potluck-style so bring something to share that you like to eat or drink. Post a comment below to let others know what you're thinking of bringing.

Food Drive for the LA Food Bank

We're organizing another food drive for the LA Food Bank. While the LA Food Bank distributes food to over 640 charitable agencies (Midnight Mission, Boys & Girls Club, etc.). Here are some good ideas of what to bring:

  • Cash (seriously, food banks can do a lot with a dollar!)
  • Proteins, including peanut butter, canned tuna, canned chicken, etc.
  • Soups and stews
  • Pasta and rice
  • Cereal, including breakfast cereal and oatmeal
  • Canned vegetables, including tomatoes and tomato sauce
  • Canned or dried beans and peas
  • Canned fruits
  • Fruit juice, boxed or canned
  • Prepared box mixes, including macaroni and cheese and Hamburger Helper
  • Shelf-stable milk

If you're thinking of bringing perishables, baked goods and home-made dishes, bring those to the holiday party instead!

Thank You to Our Sponsors

Droplabs Los Angeles This event is being hosted by Droplabs (@Droplabs), a collaborative Drupal event and coworking space in Downtown Los Angeles. We're quickly gaining a reputation for being the only free coworking space around with a freemium business model: come work here for free and only pay for the extras, such as 24/7 access, equipment rental and a locker for your belongings.

Exaltation of Larks - Expert Drupal strategy, consulting, development and training Our drinks, video conferencing and raffle prize sponsor for this event is Exaltation of Larks, a Drupal strategy, consulting, development and training company with a team of Drupal experts in Los Angeles. We create fun websites, mobile apps, virtual worlds and e-commerce sites. Follow us at @LarksLA to learn more about our Drupal services and upcoming trainings.

Agenda

As always, we'll also have community Q&A, during which time anyone in attendance can ask questions, divine answers from the crowd and give brief, 5-10 minute-long presentations known as lightning talks. We'll finish off the night with even more networking and a Drupal After Dark at 9:00pm.

To join the meeting, click the Sign up button below to receive the meeting URL and password (a Drupal.org account is required).

During the meetup, several of the event organizers will also be monitoring Twitter for feedback and questions that mention @DowntownDrupal.

Breakout Sessions

We have several spaces available for breakout sessions. This is an open, multi-track format where we break into groups and discuss a variety of topics. Each breakout session is led by a volunteer who picks the topic, picks the space and can optionally report back to the larger group in the form of an announcement or lightning talk.

This is also an opportunity for Users Helping Users, which is a participant-driven format where members of the community give and receive help with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal.

Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bona fide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

Featured Presentations

At this meetup, we're having our usual news and announcements, raffle prizes, lightning talks (which are short, bite-sized presentations) and featured presentations.

Raffle prizes! Collect them all! Must be present to win!

Raffle prizes at this meetup have been provided by Exaltation of Larks. Our raffle prizes often include discount codes, magazines, DVDs, books, and free seats to professional Drupal trainings. We are always grateful to our sponsors for their continued support.

If you have any items you'd like to donate to the raffle, please contact any of the organizers at the meetup. Thank you!

Help the LA Food Bank!

christefano's picture

Just a quick reminder that this is coming up pretty soon. If you're in town on the 18th, please drop by for our meetup, holiday party and food drive!

Our goal at Droplabs is to raise even more for the LA Food Bank than we did last year when we raised $495. More details about our event are at http://groups.drupal.org/node/267768#food-drive

If anyone ends up donating to the food bank via their website as a result of our holiday party and food drive, let us know so that we can add it to our total. Thanks!

Hello all - I've got a presentation I would like to make on becoming a better Drupaler. It's a little longer than 5 minutes but less than 10.

Drupal Goodness + Holiday Party + Feeding LA = too good to pass up, so count me in!

There might also be a short presentation and live demo from myself and Christefano on a module we've recently worked on, Feedmine.

The module focuses on making it easier to collect complete and accurate feedback from any Drupal site (currently supporting 6.x & 7.x) while integrating with Redmine, a flexible project management web application.

Cash works, too!

There was a good conversation about our food drive last year at http://groups.drupal.org/node/192073#comments about cash donations to the LA Food Bank and we ended up having mostly cash and just 2 cans of food.

If anyone donates to the LA Food Bank on their own as a result of our party, please let us know so that we can add it to our total for the evening.

Much Thanks

I really enjoyed the meeting. Thank you all for the hospitality.

Thank you for coming!

christefano's picture

Thanks to everyone who turned out for last night's meetup. Here's a list of notes. These are from memory, so if anything is incorrect or incomplete, please post a reply at http://groups.drupal.org/node/267768#comments and help set the record straight.

  • This was Droplabs' 2nd annual holiday party, and once again we raised money and collected food items for the LA Food Bank. The total for the food drive hasn't been calculated yet but it looks like we're going to exceed what we raised last year
  • A lively discussion about "Why Drupal?" sprung up and the wiki page that followed at http://groups.drupal.org/node/273748 may be the basis of a presentation at a future meetup or at SCALE 11x, an enormous open source conference in February, 2013, that's right in our own back yard at http://www.socallinuxepo.com
  • Sadly, the open beta / freemium model at Droplabs is coming to an end and Droplabs is beginning 2013 with a paid model. Unlike other coworking spaces, however, which charge a day fee, Droplabs will be charging an affordable monthly fee. Paid upgrades will remain the same for now
  • Droplabs is expanding its mission to include teaching and learning of all topics, not just web and tech. We're planning a Drupal barn raising for Droplabs.net in January and will be building functionality for our community to indicate things such as "I want a class on this subject!" and "I can teach a class on this subject!"
  • Strong desire for a Drupal installfest was voiced by several attendees and we can easily put it on the calendar. If you'd like to attend this event and volunteer as a mentor or guinea pig at our first-ever installfest in Downtown Los Angeles, let us know! http://droplabs.net/contact
  • During the meetup, many people began requesting and offering classes on various subjects, from Drush and a 10-week "Drupal school" to workshops on ethnic cuisine and herpatology (but not together!)
  • Speaking of a "Drupal school", this is already coming together and Droplabs and the Downtown Drupal community is soliciting tips and suggestions and has a survey to see what kind of interest there is in this program. If you'd like to attend as either a mentor or as a student, fill out the brief survey at http://droplabs.net/surveys/drupal-school-at-droplabs
  • We talked about GLADCamp, the Greater Los Angeles Area Drupal Camp, and how it's coming up at USC in 2013. The organizing team is looking for volunteers and if if you'd like to join or are just interested in hearing the latest news as it develops, join the GLADCamp group at http://groups.drupal.org/gladcamp
  • Erin Clerico gave a fantastic presentation on Drupal Fit at http://groups.drupal.org/fit on "how to be a better Drupaler". This was a great presentation with a lot of information about how our diet and lifestyle can affect our productivity as Drupal developers! As an aside, we learned that PowerPoint clobbers WebEx when in full screen mode, and are looking into alternatives and workarounds
  • Ali Anwar and I (Christefano) presented on Feedmine, a Drupal feedback tool from Exaltation of Larks that uses Drupal as a frontend for submitting tickets to Redmine, a powerful ticketing / helpdesk system. It can be used as a replacement for GetSatisfaction and UserVoice and is free to download for both Drupal 6 and Drupal 7 at https://drupal.org/project/feedmine
  • Videos from both presentations will be be uploaded soon to the Downtown Drupal video channel at http://vimeo.com/DowntownDrupal
  • Exaltation of Larks raffled off a Drupal frontend performance audit, which can be used to improve the performance of a Drupal site. We also had a brief discussion about the differences between frontend and backend performance in Drupal
  • A group of around 10 stayed into the wee hours for a bonfire and barbecue. Thanks to everyone who brought grillins and to Lee for being the skilled grill master!
  • Finally, don't forget that Drupal 6.27 and Drupal 7.18 were both released today! A poll asking who has updated yet is at http://groups.drupal.org/node/273908 and encourages everyone to update their sites as soon as possible

Some more notes

nodiac's picture

Some more notes:

  1. James from Sensis Agency at http://sensisagency.com introduced himself and Sensis, a Drupal shop and our Drupal meetup host and sponsor in Downtown LA. Sensis will be hosting next month's Drupal meetup on January 15th.

  2. Photos from the DrupalCamp site visit at USC are on our Meetup.com page: http://www.meetup.com/DowntownDrupal/photos/11873892/182180952/

  3. Ali talked about the Examples project and how it is useful for new Drupal developers: http://drupal.org/project/examples

  4. We used http://www.random.org to pick the winner of the frontend performance audit during the raffle drawing and Christefano asked if there's a Drupal module that will do this. Anyone?

This was an excellent meetup and the biggest holiday Drupal party ever in Los Angeles! Thank you everyone!

Random.org

christefano's picture

We used http://www.random.org to pick the winner of the frontend performance audit during the raffle drawing and Christefano asked if there's a Drupal module that will do this. Anyone?

There's a project requirements gathering wiki for coworking space management software, and I did some research on Drupal-based contests and raffle prize drawings:

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/274063#features

Until we have something else that's Drupal-based, Random.org works for me.

Thanks for these notes, Lee.

christefano's picture

Thanks for these notes, Lee. I didn't realize it at the time but you're right that this was our biggest holiday party yet.

If anyone's nursing a hangover from their holiday celebrations, feel free to join us for a day of relaxation in Koreatown on January 1st:

Get Drupal Fit and Relax at Century Spa
   http://groups.drupal.org/node/274253

This will be preceded by a 45-minute introduction to Korean culture and customs at Droplabs. Check it out!

Good times

vmi's picture

Thanks for letting me present on feedmine - I got some great feedback and suggestions for the next release. If anyone has any additional feature requests, please post them to the issue queue:
http://drupal.org/project/issues/feedmine

Ali, thank you for working on

christefano's picture

Ali, thank you for working on Feedmine and for presenting!

Would you like to give this presentation again at SANDcamp? It turns out I won't be leaving for DrupalCon Sydney until after SANDcamp and I can co-present with you again:

   http://sandcamp.org/node/add/session

To everyone who attended the meetup, there isn't a development roadmap for Feedmine yet so this is a great time for you to get involved in the issue queue. Even making feature requests is a way to help.

Good idea

vmi's picture

We should present on Feedmine again, however, regrettably I won't be attending SANDcamp this year so it'll have to wait for another time. Have a great time in DrupalCon Sydney.

Since the presentation we gave was recorded, will it be available to view online for those who weren't able to make it out?

The presentation was recorded

christefano's picture

The presentation was recorded and will be uploaded soon.

If you'd like to help out and make this happen sooner, let me know and I'll add you to our Downtown Drupal group chat. Our group has a few awesome folks working on our backlog of videos, but we can always use some more help!

Here's a wiki page that details our current process:

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/269563

It's a wiki page so please feel free to updated it and ask questions in the comments at http://groups.drupal.org/node/269563#comments

Thanks

vmi's picture

Thanks for the update, it'd also be a good idea to add the presentation to the feedmine module page once it's ready.

Results from LA Food Bank food drive

christefano's picture

The results are in from our food drive for the LA Food Bank:

  • $594 in cash is going to the food bank, which beats our record from last year and translates to nearly 2400 individual meals
  • 3 grocery bags of food items (i.e. boxes and canned food) were collected, which will be inspected, inventoried and distributed by the LA Food Bank
  • Our relationship with the LA Food Bank and our local neighborhood community is now stronger than ever!

Happy holidays and congratulations for a job well done, everyone! I love our community.

Great job

Hey, all! This is Justin. Quite sorry to have missed the spa day this New Years, but wanted to post this piece weeks after Christefano asked me to on Twitter. It corroborates what Erin said in his fitness piece by adding some studies which would indicate that human evolution favored the physically fit as well, and that there is a connection between a healthy mind and body. Hope you dig it

Thanks, Justin! That article

christefano's picture

Thanks, Justin! That article is the first place I've read about brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. The Wikipedia article on it suggests that high levels of BDNF would explain why some people are addicted to exercise:

For everyone who's interested in Drupal Fit but couldn't make it to Erin's presentation, be sure to check out the group at http://groups.drupal.org/fit
