You're Done, and I'm Just Getting Started!

Darn, My PEG TV station clients missed out on the DOM project group. But, they love the project and want me to upgrade their very static web site to the Open Media Project model. I know you are all working very hard on the installation profile, and that it is not ready. So, if I begin the project without the profile, is there some documentation somewhere that sets out what modules get installed at what stage, etc., along with known pitfalls, or umm, possible problems?

P.S. If you need a beta tester for the installation profile, I volunteer! (I can take it, believe me, I've already been through this a few times.) I am running Ubuntu 9.04, and have the most recent installation of LAMPP.

"Done" is a very strong word.

"Done" is a very strong word.

It would be challenging to

It would be challenging to say the least to get the complete OMP toolset up and running at the moment without assistance. There is documentation scattered all over this group, but no step-by-step document yet. Erin is putting that together as part of our installation profile release for the end of December.

You could start installing specific components however, in particular MERCI is fairly stand-alone. You could also install OM Project to start understanding the structure. If you took it piece by piece, you could probably figure out a lot as you went along depending on your experience with Drupal / modules...

Strong words lead to strong actions

Thank you Brian, Great advice!

You folks totally have it going on, I'm in awe. I think all of the answers to my potential questions are in this topic. (Including the one you just answered!) I can find them as I need them, or chime in here. There's a really strong user group in my area.

Can I build on the latest Drupal release? Oh, does the DOM Project use Ubercart, or is all processing through CiviCRM?

I can tell you guys are moving at a clip. Thanks to both of you for getting back to me, via email and here.

Quickly... Everything was

Quickly...

Everything was written in 6 with an eye on 7. With the exception of Views, many of the other modules we leverage have either been rolled into core (CCK's fields) or the modules maintainer has committed to the #D7CX pledge: That the module will have a full Drupal 7 release on the day that Drupal 7 is released.

We've leveraged CiviCRM heavily, but have designed everything to be independent of it. MERCI will show CiviCRM data about users when printing a contacts if CiviCRM is installed. Other than that, we rely on CiviCRM Role Sync to convert certifications and membership to Drupal roles.

We've used Ubercart for silent auctions at DOM, but haven't done much else with it. Last time I talked to Darrick from Davis Media Access, he was planning to use Ubercart as a something of a fund raising tool... giving the audience the option of "sponsoring" an analog show to be digitized. This makes sense for Davis since they have such a large archive of analog programming still on tape.

Darrick spends a fair amount of time on #drupal-openmedia on IRC.

Great information

Thanks so much! I really want to use Ubercart for things like station T-shirts, membership, pretty much anything involving moola. So, it's good to know it's a viable option.

I'll take a shot at it also

Hey Willa,

I was about to ask the same thing also - so lets share our experiences here.

I am specing out a whole new facility and the Open Media Project came to our attention. Our new host / partner already has an extensive Drupal based site and dedication to open source - so they were very interested in this project.

We have been working with Telvue for out new headend - but we also want to build a new web interface for our access beginning in the new year.

I'm just getting started with Drupal (know Simple Machines / tiny portal / wordpress and Cold Fusion).

I just installed a test site - but already ran into a few issues getting the TVframe theme working right.
Let us know your progress

Sounds Great!

I've been working with Drupal for some time almost 2 years now, but am just starting out as a consultant flying solo. I think this is going to be a lot of fun. And, a lot of hard work, (a.k.a. fun).

Based on Brian's reply, I think I will go ahead and start my engine. ;-)

Jpiazzo, did you install using that course of action, i.e., Drupal 6.x, OMP, MERCI, and then TVframe? I realize that my install question may seem tedious. But, I used to work on that other - non-open source platform, where things had to be installed in a particular order or they would break something. That's what I'm trying to avoid.

Question for Lane at BNN TV, or ...

willazilla's picture

Hi Lane - Sorry, hope this isn't bugging you too much, but .... Are you guys getting the data for your "What's on Now" schedules at http://www.bnntv.org/programming/whats_on_now.php using an RSS feed from your Tightrope system? Or, is that data purely manual?

Is BNN TV the only one in the OMP beta group using Tightrope? Do you plan to upgrade?
