I'm really having a tough time working through all the intricacies of OpenPublish, and I've had a total fail on getting questions answered in this group. (still don't know how to edit a topic hub overview) Some good documentation would be EXTREMELY valuable in easing the learning process.
What's the prognosis for documentation???

The documents are lacking,
The documents are lacking, but if you hang on these groups and ask your questions you'll get responses. Sometimes you may have to wait a bit, or re-phrase your questions. Sometimes people skip over what you are asking, but you didn't phrase it like they think in terms.
Everyone is in this together. There is a great deal of interest in the OpenPublish. Be patient and work through your issues and questions, without panic. If you become anxious you'll do a screw up and delete the OpenPublish... then a week later you will intall it again. LOL
I suggest not to enable all the modules as default. Go back into modules and disable a bunch of them and then start working through them by enabling and learning each one as you go. That is a pretty good way to get up to speed.
Read the documents on each module carefully and do some Google searches on the module as well. Then configure each and make sure you are competent with it.
Remember, there is inter-dependency between some modules that can really mess you up. That is why I suggest taking it slow and enabling modules as you go. If you set out today to build a site with all the features of OpenPublish it would probably take weeks of your time reading, studying, configuring and testing. The OpenPublish is a working application, but it contains a lot of modules that must be configured and setup properly.
Usually, I have found if no one answers your post there may be good cause. By that I mean I've found most of the time the answer was smack in my face and I was just missing it.
IMO, it was probably a mistake for the dev to enable all the modules with the install.
Best regards
Thanks domineaux
I appreciate your response. For some reason, many of my questions have remained unanswered. Look down the forum and you'll see a few listed. I've usually been able to find solutions to Drupal modules by searching for posts from other users and by reading the documentation provided. However, with OpenPublish specific modules like Topic Hub, there just isn't much out there. I've been trying to figure out how to edit the Topic Hub description for weeks now: http://groups.drupal.org/node/41056
Maybe I'm just dense. :-)
Currently I don't have any
Currently I don't have any sites on my local server or on a server I can access with OpenPublish or I would take alook at your issue.
I build sites constantly, admin them for a couple weeks and then turn them over to the owners.
I probably should have let your post go unanswered, since I can't work your issue now. The Topic Hub may be built around a use of "Views module" would be my guess.
Don't think you are dense, the learning curve for Drupal is quite a job. Couple that with a comprehensive application like OpenPublish and you're into a difficult environment.
Topic Hub Creation
If I understand your question correctly, then here is what I've found.
Post a couple articles or more, blog, etc. Then, in the admin section click on CONTENT. In the list that comes up at the top of the page click on TOPIC HUBS. Then click on HOT TOPICS. On that page you will find a list of words, "taxonomy"?, with the statement beside each one "create topic hub". Click on the one you want, and you have a topic hub.
Hope that addresses your question and helps.
Documentation always seems to follow way behind the creation of actual programs in the world of software and the Internet. And, too often it is assumed that everyone already knows what to do, even with new software. You know, if you know one program, you know the other. Seems it is not realized that most folks who want and need these programs don't have that much experience as is assumed. It's like an astronaut trying to explain in "his" simplest terms how to fly a space ship to a piper cub pilot. Even the simplest terms don't fit the piper cub, but the astronaut keeps telling us, it's simple, see.

If you are using Panels for your Topic Hubs, then go into the Panel Content tab and edit the custom content of the Overview pane.
If you are not using Panels, then just edit the Topic Hub node and change the node body. Let us know how that works.

Have you read what is written
Have you read what is written at the beginning of http://www.opensourceopenminds.com/openpublish/download ? Is your server ready to install OP?

Sorry to hear about your
Sorry to hear about your problems.
The reason mostly is that the inhumane shared hosting providers remorselessly constrain system resources (memory, execution time etc.), PHP does not get enough power to complete installation and unfortunately you are left with a broken installation that does not work.
We are trying to implement all kinds of extra stuff to help this problem, but it's not easy and it's not entirely OpenPublish or Drupal's fault.
As the last resort we plan to publish "official" DB and file tars so you could skip installation altogether. We really do not want to do it, though, because maintaining such static tars is a tedious, error-prone process. We may have to, though.
Thank you

Why not put up a minimum
Why not put up a minimum config for PHP - Apache?
It is nothing to install this app when your php and Apache configured properly
I can literally install a working OpenPublish in about 10 minutes, and most of that time is expended in FTP openPublish to Webserver.
You can do the zip/tar if you like it is not a best solution. If it were the Drupal would use it.
What do you mean by "minimum
What do you mean by "minimum config"?
System requirements are described here: http://bit.ly/opreqs Do you mean something more than that?
Thx

Yep... that's what I
Yep... that's what I mean.
Just how important is APC?
Installing an optimizer like APC is highly recommended, especially for production use.
I definitely don't have it installed on my sites.
Is Drupal caching in the Performance configuration adequate?
APC has tremendous impact on
APC has tremendous impact on the performance and scalability. Average performance improvement is about 10x, so it can make crawling-slow site start flying.
APC is very important for large Drupal projects and this is why:
Among other things, APC serves several important purposes:
1) It loads PHP code into memory
2) parses and pre-processes it
3) Keeps code in memory
PHP is a scripting language (i.e. there's no compiler like there's for Java or some other platforms) so every time you access a web-page PHP needs to load all code from disk (disk reads are slow), parse it (read and understand, takes time), transform it to machine-readable form (takes time), execute.
APC caches all these steps. It almost completely eliminates the need to read files from disk on page access, eliminates need to parse code at each page access.
Now imagine Drupal: it has A LOT of files with programming code. Imagine all the modules that make a Drupal installation. Now imagine - OpenPublish which adds tons of code on top of Drupal.
You get the picture. APC is very important.
There're other, similar systems, like: EAccelerator, XCache. They all do more or less the same. APC has been most stable and reliable in our experience, but others should work, too.
Do you have any of the others installed?

According to the the plan I purchased,
My server meets the requirements you have published.
Just to inform everybody who
Just to inform everybody who is having problem with installing OP. In my laptop (running Ubuntu), I installed the Xampp (called lampp for Linux, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html) package. Note that, the version 1.7.3 has php 5.3 which does not work for Drupal/OP. So get version 1.7.1.
Then tried to install OP with the default php.ini configuration. It did not work.
Then I just changed the following three lines in php.ini file. if any of the lines is not there, add it.
memory_limit 92Mmax_execution_time 120
realpath_cache_size to 1M
It worked :)
I tried this only to see how others are having trouble while I did not have any and what is the actual problem of all the errors.
Hope this helps.

Question
Where is the php.ini file?
Do you create it yourself?
Where do you put it?
That depends on the hosting
That depends on the hosting provider. You should ask your hosting provider.

where is php file?
It isn't called the php.ini file in the OP version of Drupal. It is something like file.inc. I don't remember now. But, the funny thing is, when you load it into a program like Notepad++, then the heading says php.ini. Took me a bit of time to find it. Again, another confusing thing that could be simplified. Sorry I can't remember the exact name. Senility must be setting in.
This does not sound right.
This does not sound right. Drupal file called file.inc has nothing to do with PHP configuration file php.ini. Also php.ini is not part of Drupal or OpenPublish, it's a system-wide file governing PHP configuration.

Not sound right
You are correct. That is why I said I don't remember the file name.
However, in order to get the OP program to install on my home computer with XAMPP, I had to change a file that had INC on it. As in file type I guess. Sorry I don't remember clearly now, and I don't want to go back with a new install and try to figure it out.
Be that as it may, when I made the changes OP installed. If and when I remember I'll re post the info correctly.
The copy in my notepad++ though is titled: php.ini
This is a good lesson for me, and perhaps others, to write down each step done in a new install. Then the memory of a nearly XX year old won't have to be relied on.
carousal/ dynamic display
Hey,
I am running OP 2.3 and would like some kind of dynamic image display or carousal on my home page. Will appreciate if someone can provide me with some guidelines to do this. I have seen a lot of dcumentation about these for drupal, not for Open publish. Thanks in advance
