Virtual Seattle DUG meetings--a virtual Seattle Dojo?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

As one who would love to attend the DUG meeting each month, but inevitably has a conflict of one sort or another limiting my attendance, I'd be very interested in exploring the potential of a virtual meeting--similar to what other local drupal communities are doing see Drupal Dojos, Hack Nights, and Cafés in your community

Perhaps we could experiment with extending the live event to include virtual participation or perhaps we could pull together short virtual lunchtime or evening events. Has the Seattle DUG done anything like this in the past?

There are numerous ways in which we could host such events, enabling virtual participation and simultaneously build a library of lightening talks, reference tools and demonstrations which could benefit the larger community.

I've had a number of great conversations with Gusaus regarding the Drupal Kata and Dojo and believe there are a variety of ways that we could integrate DUG activities, virtual meetings and the generation of elearning content.

Any interest?

Physical and virtual meetups?

gusaus's picture

Great to see you post the Dojo idea in the Seattle group. What you're describing here is actually a bit different than what they're doing in Austin in that they are physical meetups. I think the ideal is to have in-person meetups and provide a means to capture and document them for those unable to attend. Either way, it's great to see this idea spread to other communities!

Adding virtual component to DUG meetups?

eric_sea's picture

I understand. Seattle already has a very active DUG with fantastic monthly meetings. I only wish I could attend them all.

I'm curious about incorporating a virtual aspect for those who are not able to attend, broadening outreach and at the same time beginning to capture the wealth of content contained in lightening talks, demos, sprint highlights and solutions making them available for the larger community.

Actually, we already sometimes do this...

Several of our meetings have been simulcast on web TV channels - I'm not sure where/how, as I didn't do it, but I think it could be done again. The people watching/listening have also gotten on our IRC channel (#drupal-seattle) so that they could ask questions and comment.

We have sometimes broadcast

We have sometimes broadcast our meetings via uStream, but the problem is those broadcasts are not very interactive. There is a text chat involved but that is less than ideal. I don't know what IS ideal, I just know that's not it :)

streaming talks

i haven't seen the previous broadcasts, but i do find it an interesting idea. if someone had a presentation they wanted to do, i think that would be a great thing to broadcast.

Drupal-Seattle IRC channel

The #drupal-seattle IRC channel (on irc.freenode.net) functions as a rolling virtual meeting of sorts. If you don't have a client installed, there's a web client at http://java.freenode.net/. Also, some IM clients (like Trillian) support IRC chat.

As a bridge to the real-life meetings, maybe at each meeting we can designate someone to summarize the live meeting into the IRC channel, transcribing tips & tricks etc.?

Web X or GoTo Meeting for next SDUG?

drtrueblue's picture

Perhaps the group would be interested in trying out "Web X (Mac/Windows/Linux)" or "GoTo Meeting (Mac/Windows)" for our next meeting? I use GoTo Meeting regularly and have been fairly impressed with it's ease and ability to establish a worthwhile dialogue amongst multiple sites. Meetings can also be archived as discussed. If there is an interest, I would be happy to coordinate the effort for our next meeting.

Anyone else interest in conferencing Seattle DUG meetings?

There have been a few issues in related discussions:
* virtual solutions/accounts provided to the Drupal community which do not have costs associated with them

  • supporting the Linux folks is necessary -- although I understand there are options to run some of these in a windows emulation shell

  • need for participants to be able to conduct lightning talks on their own (localhost) systems, rather than being forced to use one system where conferencing software had been installed -- I believe I have a solution for this, although more testing is required.

  • potential tasks: coordinate, promote, record, edit and post relevant portions back to the Drupal Dojo--It seems like a long list, but actually it could be kept very simple, processing and posting only the gems.

Possibilities may also include:
- use of the Drupal Kata's DimDim account
- use of the Drupal Kata's GoToMeeting account

That said... I love the idea and can help with some of the above.

I am interested in exploring options that would make it easy for Drupal DUGs, cafes, meetups, and other Drupal events to be extended to the virtual Drupal community, while potentially repackaging portions as lessons for the Drupal Dojo.

Any current interest in Seattle Drupal Dojo?

gusaus's picture

I'll be in Seattle for the next couple months and would be interested in helping start a Dojo working group along the lines of what's started in Austin, Boston, and elsewhere.

Any current interest in this type of thing? Potential venues?

Thanks

Seattle Drupal Dojo

mastodonlabs's picture

I'd be interested in a Seattle Drupal Dojo. i'm wondering how it might be organized. what would go on? how much time would be allocated for it? how often would the dojo have a session? Would it occur weekly/biweekly/monthly? so many questions. :)

I'm also interested in

chrisf-qualis's picture

I'm also interested in whatever sort of Dojo / talks occur. I'm new to Drupal but not PHP or web development in general.

Seems like there's already enough interest to begin?

gusaus's picture

Susan MacPhee's overview of what they've started in Boston could serve as a jumping off point - http://groups.drupal.org/node/104349

If there's a handful of people interested in regular (weekly?) workshops we should figure out a good day, potential venue(s) and begin.

Any other interest, venue ideas, preference on day, thoughts on format?
