UCAN's new media rights project
Hi everyone,
UCAN is a regional consumer group based in San Diego, and we are big Drupal users.
We are launching a project to encourage the use of new media technologies, especially open source ones like drupal, and will be providing non-profit legal advice and assistance, as well as opening our studio to those who need a place to create video, audio, or other media.
We would love to be involved in a drupal group, and could even try to help the group find a place to meet. I'm sure there's interest out there, I know the developers are around!
Anyway people can call me at 619-591-8870 or skype "newmediarights" and we can work on setting up a meeting....
thanks,
Art
Great! I am willing to
Great! I am willing to setup the next one. Depending on how many people come, we can have it here at the Achieve Internet office or find a place to have it. Let's set a date for the next one and see if we can get some topics together. I can't do the first week of November, but any other time should be fine. I will figure out the location piece as soon as we get a date settled.
Now, does anyone have any topics or feel a burning desire to talk about something specific?
topics of interest
I'm pretty flexible for what time I can go to a meeting.
I'm interested in development aspects for Drupal, so topics about the forms or menu interface would be of interest. Another topic would be expected impact of Drupal 6.0 on current modules, what areas are going to need to be modified to work with Drupal 6.0. And I'd be interested in best practice recommendations for Drupal installations interfacing with other software, such as an XML editor or reading data recorded by other software.

Yes, I'm interested, I've
Yes, I'm interested, I've been hoping to see a new meeting notice and thinking about checking into a place to meet, glad to see other people are thinking the same thing.

Would love it!
Count me in
... I've been waiting since the last one!
I will even buy the beer!
Come on San Diego!
I know we have more than 8 Drupal pros in town. Achieve has 25 developers who are trying to get me to send them to BADCamp in SF. I know there are others out there.
So what's it going to take?
Personally I would like to see this be a developers group. Coders that want to learn and talk about how to use and improve Drupal. We have hosted the open groups and they lose focus fast. I think there is absolutely a need for a User group as well, however for the Achieve team we want to talk code.
Anyone have a really cool space to host the event? Our office is always an option but I am sure not the only option.

I agree, a developers group
I agree, a developers group would be fun. If there's enough people willing to come...
If it's only developers I'm out...
I definitely agree that there was a dichotomy of developers and end users at the previous meetings. I'm not sure it was really a problem though. I guess I think that developers could often use a point of view that lacks an understanding of programming in order to push things more towards usability and that end users also benefit from an understanding of limitations and reasons why some things are done. Since Drupal is clearly intended to serve both groups of people and the modules created by developers ought to be fairly simple for end users if contributed to the community, I think that a single group is more appropriate.
Just my two cents, Eric

True enough. I think at this
True enough. I think at this point a single group is probably the best way to go, too.
Compromise
Each of the previous meetings suffered from the same problem, the dichotomy between the interests of developers and end users.
Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with a mixed group as long as there is s defined topic and we stick to it.
But I got a bit frustrated hearing the complaints from all sides after our previous meetups. Bored developers and confused end users.
If this group is going to happen, I think we all need to be a bit flexible and more tolerant. Also, let's pick topics and stick to them.
It may also help if we were to simply have the meeting monthly, regardless, and whomever wants to show up can. If we set it up at a decent public location like Cream coffee bar, we can simply pick a date/time and have the meeting every month.
If you want to present and nobody's claimed a given meetup, post your topic/agenda here.
