Software Sites

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

As a Mac user, I'm a regular reader of http://www.macupdate.com and I've recently noticed postings for both the latest version of Joomla and Plone show up there.

I think we should probably post Drupal updates on these types of sites. Not sure what the process is, but since it's possible to install Drupal on Mac, Windows, and Linux, it seems like the door is pretty much wide open.

We used to put new releases on freshmeat.net

So i'm pretty sure new announcements should be made wherever applicable.

Also. saying you are a mac user among drupal developers is like saying you breathe oxygen =)

Great points - where else

Great points - where else should announcements go?

Certainly personal/corporate Blogs of drupal users
FreshMeat.net
Slashdot
Macupdate
Digg
Performancing
...?

I was curious how Mozilla handles this since they are relatively successful with marketing, so I emailed Paul Kim (in charge of marketing) and asked him:

We maintain a press list for Mozilla announcements that is accessible for subscription here: http://www.mozilla.com/press/ (on the right side of the page)

The actual subscription form is here:
https://mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/press-list

It's a pull mechanism in that we've built up the list (which has 300+ subscribers at this point) over the past 8 years.

Aside from the mailing list, which includes mainly technology journalists, we do coordinate press tours prior to product launches. For this we're working with our PR firm, A&R Partners, to schedule and book meetings with top tier press (NY Times, WSJ, etc.). Our next press tour will roll out in August 06 for Firefox 2.

Last thing we do is post press releases and announcements to mozilla.com/press.

What do people think? In addition to working to get a list of sites where community members can actively announce the release (and who is going to handle which site) we could also try a little harder to get a "press" link on the front page that encourages them to signup for the announcements newsletter.

Press Page

Great idea!

I propose a Drupal press page that would live at drupal.org/press. This page would include:

• Information about and a signup form for the press mailing list
• Links to past press releases
• An RSS feed of press releases

It would be easy enough to have a 'press' taxonomy term with an associated RSS feed, but a mailing list is going to be a much more proactive medium for distribution.
