South Africa

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

This is a group for all users, developers and designers interested in the Drupal Open Source CMS, who are based in South Africa. The goal of this group is to foster the local community, provide local support and to allow the local Drupal industry to grow.

Its been a while and we have missed you. We have had 4 rather cosy meetings so far this year, and with the winter coming on we thought that a little more body heat would be good. Soooo, come and join us!!

This meeting format will take the form of a presentation and then a workshop in which we take a look at two sites which Marco will select, one good, and one bad.

Please take a look at the Eventbrite page here http://www.eventbrite.com/event/6730000613 to find out more about the meeting and also to book a seat :).

Hey guys,

We'll probably follow the same sort of agenda as last time and just see how much progress was possible since then. I'll try to post notes before tomorrow evening too.

Kind regards,
Riaan

Top South African Drupal Sites at beginning of May

The to site script runs once, some times fails fetching a site and just continues. Data is based on people using the Alexa toolbar. Detection is open source, so it's easy to circumvent if you don't like your site identified. So these aren't seriously rigorous ranks, but still worth it for fun.

That being said, I also made a mistake in reporting Drupal growth last month. We have three months' data now. The fist month we detected 99 Drupal sites in the 13 000-odd sites checked. The second 86 and this last month 87.

Thanks JHB Meet-up for git

Thanks to the JHB meet-up people for pushing me on the git issue.

I gave up the weekend and with advice from Nick to refer to the open source git book http://git-scm.com/book sat down and got to work on learning git.

I'm only on mid-chapter 2, but also read a bit of chapter 3 and already managed to get some stuff done:

On Drupal.org I managed to set up a sandbox and put a theme, Zen Slate, in there: https://drupal.org/sandbox/nightwatch/1981700

Drupal for more than just websites

Don't limit Drupal sales to just websites. We find that traditional websites make up a smaller part of our business even when they are quite large while innovative new setups from overlays on video on screens in franchise stores to large scale presentations and intricate real-time integrations make up more of our work.

User group meeting

When and Where: Wednesday the 24th of April, 18:30, at Adcorp Holdings, 28 Sloane Street, Bryanston (first building on the left when entering at the gate).

Hello Everyone,

Over the past month there has been a lot of movement in the Drupal community of South Africa. Discussions have been held on Democratizing Drupal, forming an Association, and how to bring the various groups into contact with one another.

After much consideration between various individuals and myself, I would like to invite anyone and everyone interested, to the first meeting of Drupal Association South Africa.

Additional SA group pages

With all the new activity in this group Willem suggested we add a couple of pages to make the content more navigable. I have added the following pages: Events, Discussions, Wiki and Jobs. Please log in to see the changes otherwise you may be seeing the old cached version (or just visit http://groups.drupal.org/south-africa/events and you'll see the new tabs). Suggestions for improving usability welcome :-)

IRC (#drupal-za)

Getting Started

You can read the IRC documentation on Drupal.org, but perhaps a faster way would be to simply install XChat and, rehgardless of your OS platform, follow the Ubuntu XChatHowTo.

#drupal-za

The South African Drupal community has an IRC channel, #drupal-za on irc.freenode.net. If you are a local Drupal user come and chat.

DrupalCamp South Africa

I've got nothing to add to this page yet, so it is a placeholder to link to from the main wiki... and a wiki itself, so if you have some ideas, go ahead and add some content.

Would a central, like Bloemfontein, location be better or perhaps two a year, one in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town? Maybe just one?

National

Three primary goals for a national strategy for Drupal in South Africa:

  1. Provably and demonstrably freeing our Drupal domains from commercial ownership and control and placing them under nationally representative community control.

  2. Creating some sort of nationally representative organizational structure for easier contact, organizing events and promoting Drupal and as a precursor to a national association (non-profit).

  3. Promoting Drupal for the growth of the community and for adoption among currently non-drupal possible future adopters.

Top SA Drupal Sites at beginning of April

http://top-sa-drupal-sites.burtronix.co.za

Looks like Drupal grew the tiniest bit (not significantly) in SA as a percentage of the sites analyzed. Joomla! dropped a bit and Wordpress usage increased noticeably from 56.1% 58.7%.

Internationally, Drupal remained stable for per-site usage but lost out a bit to Wordpress' growth in pages served. We really need D8 to come now ;-) Joomla! lost a tiny bit in sites (probably mostly due to WP's growth in that area) and notably more in pages served (just not up to the task).
