I'm really struggling with an error with a module I want to use. If you have an answer for me I would REALLY appreciate it.

php-json on Ubuntu 13.10

So I'm, setting up Ubuntu 13.10 boxes and come to the drush setup (just after installing PHP). Turns out php-json is no longer included in php-common. How odd, I think. Drush errors out not finding the often used json_encode() function.

You have to love free software! I sure doubled my love for it today. It would seem that the original author included a line to the MIT license: "The Software shall be used for Good, not Evil." that effectively makes it a proprietary license. We can't use that.

Here's a very funny bit where he talks about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hCimLnIsDA

Learning New Stuff - Sessions on IRC - Sass/Compass, Guard, Livereload, AngularJS etc.

We learn so many new things at our Johannesburg Drupal user group meet-ups. But time is short at the meet-ups and it takes (me) a few weeks to assimilate the new tech and get to use it.

If you guys would like to try it, perhaps we can have IRC sessions in #drupal-sa to share the new knowledge. Maybe also a bit more along the lines of small chunks and specifically making them useful in everyday current Drupal development workflow.

Related content view with node references drupal 7

I have different content types (article, event, video, news) that have a node reference field (cat_ref), which refers to a content type Category Page, which are different kinds of sports.

So if I have an article with a node reference of surfing, I would like to display all other articles, events, videos or news that also have a node reference of surfing in a block view at the bottom.

Hey guys,

I have been terribly quiet of late here; But also notice the GDo page is quiet in general too. My guess is that it's silly season for everyone and that work's just keeping everyone nicely busy.

Event location is in the event link, please RSVP (which is important) but also attend (which is even more important, so if you forget to RSVP, still attend ;-)

Hello All,

Our new Top Websites site is live (though still in beta).

For the technically inclined:

DASA Constitution: Community Input

Hello Everyone!

After several months, we have a proposed constitution for the drupal Association South Africa (DASA) for you to look at. Pleas let rip on comments if you see anything that we may change to help make it better for our community.

Thank you to the DASA meeting guys for the late nights and hours of dry talk on the document. I'm sure that we'll be able to associate and register soon enough and can then get on with all the nice plans you guys have for assisting the growth of our local community!

Kind regards,
Riaan

Guided Drupal Training Anyone?

Hello South African Drupalistas!

Something more of a commercial message than usual from me. Though very much in support of growing the community as always:

Burtronix (the company I work for) and Telamenta (another headline Drupal company in SA) are in the process of putting together some Drupal-related training courses.

Three of the biggest problems we see for the local Drupal community are:

Hetzners upgrade to PHP 5.4 - what are you doing with Drupal 6 sites?

Hi folks

For anyone who has a site hosted with Hetzner (the SA version at least) you'll know that they are about to upgrade to PHP 5.4 in September.

I've successfully upgraded all the modules on D7 sites that work happily with PHP 5.4, but not so lucky with D6 sites. The issue lies within Views - both 2x and 3x. Obviously because everyone is spending more energy on D7 modules, this is not being resolved very fast.

I am considering telling my clients, that in order to have a functioning website come end Sept 2013, they either need to move hosting or upgrade to D7.

GDoDSA Newsletter #1

GDoDSA Newsletter #1

Introduction

The first Groups.Drupal.org, Drupal South Africa (GDoDSA) newsletter. Wow, took quite a bit more time than I thought to compose. I'd love to have a webform available for more structured submissions, and well, subscriptions and a thousand more ideas that would help support our community, but we're taking the long and good path with the Drupal Association South Africa (DASA). Trying to make sure we have an actual non-profit available to avoid the commercial problem we have with the existing drupal.org.za and drupal.co.za domains.

With regards to that, I also commit to moving anything GDoDSA related, contacts, editorial, naming etc. to the DASA as soon as it requests it or become a reality (constitution etc.); I also hope to continue negotiating for a similar commitment from the current "owner" of the Drupal domains in SA.

The DASA meets again for the fourth month this Wednesday. Much have been done, but with a blocking item being a constitution so that we can become a reality, we'll be taking that as our sole topic for this month's meeting and will then, soon after, present the constitution to you all here on GDo. Once we have a constitution, we can start doing things like registering a domain, not owned by any one person, but owned by all of us, legally (with the provision that the Drupal trade mark belongs to Dries of course and is managed by the Drupal Association, so if we ever miss step, that name can be demanded from us too).

In this edition then, the wonderful people that are so often available to help and took a bit of time from their very busy schedules to submit their details for this newsletter. Thank you all, and I do hope to gather more details from everyone else for our next newsletter.

When asking for help, please consider that an offer to help is one of guidance, not an offer to do work. Expect to save enormous amounts of time researching the best technologies or trying to find the right documentation when someone points such things out. Don't expect to hand over code to fix, or ask for a site to be themed or module to be written. That's said, I've met most of the people who submitted their details and they are super friendly.

Browser wars

One of the hot topics at the JHB meetups revolves around the question "which web browser performs the best?". I'm an advocate for Firefox and I'm pleased with the findings from the browser review by Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/chrome-27-firefox-21-opera-next,3534...). Firefox 22 has improved greatly and now outperforms Chrome. :)
